Sending personal mail from work

I've seen this done a few times in the place I'm working in and was just wondering how common it actually is? Packages etc being sent for free, would do it myself only I'm not sure if it's 'okay' to do.

I've asked the office manager for a stamp for a personal letter a few times, I figure it's OK because 1) I'm asking 2) it's only 55c 3) I only do it once or twice a year and 4) they get 10 minutes extra work out of me because I don't have to go out to the post office on my lunch break.

Sending your personal parcels is just taking the piss though, I would not do that no matter how many other people I saw getting away with it. You never know when management will decide to make an example of someone.

True, then again how will they know it's personal, they're not going to open it up and check are they?

that's exactly what they're going to do if they get suspicious and they see a parcel going out with an address that is not related to one of their customers/suppliers.

No its not right, and its theft pure and simple. your taking something thats not yours without the permission of the owner.

while a letter now and again is no biggie, where do you draw the line? and if every one does it it adds up over the year.

silly thing to be caught doing tbh.

Yeah you're right. Was just curious as to how common this is in the workplace. What's the penalty for being caught? How would they catch you if everything is just dumped into the one tray and then sent off at the end of the day? Thanks.

In my last job, people did it all the time. Nobody bothered to check, and didn't care anyway.

Myself - I never did it. I always bought a book of stamps or queued at the PO to send anything. To my mind, it simply wasn't worth the aggro.

Mind you - I was late back from lunch one day, as I'd been queuing to send a parcel overseas. My boss decided to make a comment, to which I replied: 'Next time I'll just put my post in the bloody out tray like you do then!'

She shut up pretty damned quick after that!:D

Unless you have written approval from a manager who is permitted to authorise it, you haven't got a leg to stand on if they decide to fire you.

I sent one or 2 letters from work without putting a stamp on them, mainly because if i stamped the letters and then some idiot put them through the franking machine it might cause problems.

As for packages.. not worth the risk in my opinion.
