Just wanted to say I went out at about 9.30 on NS this morning and quiet roads are very slippy and main roads have limited dry patches, the rest is slush. Already seen and heard plenty of skidding and wheel spinning (cop car was one of them) so even if you can stay upright on the bike beware of over enthusiastic drivers.

Went out in Meath this morning - some very scary patches of ice - mostly it seems where stuff melted and re-froze overnight.

    turbotime......

went ou yesterday for a good 3 + hours p the phoenix park, glorious conditions :) wouldn't do it today though, there will be ice under the fresh layers now, asking for trouble really, ok falling in the park but some of the roads up to it are well ropey

Guess I'm making alternative plans for work tomorrow. Once all that crap freezes tonight it'll be even more dodgy.

Would it be possible to weave a thin chain around my tyres for extra grip? Or is there some practical alternative that slips over a tyre? I don't want to buy new tyres if possible.

only if you have disc brakes - think Gavin used cable ties last year?
I wouldn't trust it though tbh, get the ice spikes.

So it would be suicide to cycle into work tomorrow on 25c's?

I was wondering the same about doing it on 28c's. I took a walk up the road today and the roads are looking well-ropey so I'm in two minds about it. I'm only 8k from work and would actually rather cycle than drive in those conditions.

I forgot about that ! I'm trying to remember if it was actually any use. Hard to tell. I didn't fall with them on anyway.

Certainly worth a go. Could test them by putting them on and seeing if they grip when you try to pull a rear wheel skid.

Found the original link that I worked off. http://bikeportland.org/2007/01/17/ziptie-your-tire-for-better-traction-2846

    Added to Snow FAQ too.
