iPhone 4 questions

Not sure if this is the best forum to ask, but I have 2 questions about the iPhone.

I'm coming home from having worked abroad for a while. I'd like an iPhone, but I don't know if I'll be able to stay in Ireland now. If I got an iPhone, could I pause the contract for a duration, or would I be locked in for two years (assuming I didn't go the expensive pay as you go route)?

Second, are iPhones in the US locked? As in, I know that Irish iPhones are network-locked. Are American ones? I heard that Italian iPhones are, by law, not network-locked.

    Advice please!

[PS: I'm a Mac user, so I'd rather use an iPhone than a HTC or something similar.]

Yes, all US iPhone are locked.

However, you can buy a SIM-free iPhone from the Irish Apple Store which is unlocked.
