Well personally I would leave Europe for a week's holidays or a weekend getaway some time. There are parts of the world that you really can't get to in a short holiday so if you want to see them at all you should go now in your 2 month trip.

You could head for Peru/Bolivia, around India, an African safari. Depends on your budget, what you want to see, if you can stand heat etc.

Depends if you're feeling adventurous or not. Eastern Europe (like the Balkans and Ukraine) aren't so accessible from Ireland, but the rest, you can always see some other time. Depending on your level of adventurousness you could:

    - Cross the USA. New York to California is the epic journey, but you'll never be out of your comfort zone, everyone speaks English
    - See East Asia - Thailand, Vietnam, Korea, Japan or China, the future of the world is there
    - Try Eastern Europe. Start in Berlin and work through Ukraine, Poland and the Balkans to see how the other half of the Iron Curtain was. No visas required!
    - India or East Africa are also great possibilities, although perhaps jumping in the deep end if this is your first voyage

I'd be with Dory on this, leave Europe for summer hols etc. Although if you want to do it for the 2 months that'd be a plan too.
I recently became acquainted or reacquainted with the Rail Website www.seat61.com, which gives a rundown on train travel in Europe and around the world. There's some great tips on it.

2 Months really is a great chunk of time for travelling. If South America interests you easily go from Buenos Aires down through Argentina to Tierra del Fuego to the end of the world and then come up through Chile, up the coast of Chile and even up to Bolivia.

I definitely agree with everyone about leaving Europe till later. It's also more expensive once you get there so you won't be able to travel for as long as if you go to less prosperous (which often are also more interesting) nations.

    Here's a few ideas:
India - very interesting, you could easily spend 5 months travelling around the country and still not have seen it all. 30 hour train journeys don't even get you the length of the country.Cheap. Don't go during our summer as it's monsoon season then and that means swimming pools of water falling from the sky.
Nepal - scenic, wide open countryside, lovely people
Thailand - bit touristy but undeniably beautiful
Malaysia - I spent 2 months travelling around the country. Didn't find the people so friendly but has some very beautiful natural scenery (islands, huge nature reserves etc). Nicely placed next to Indonesia, Thailand
Africa - it's all there waiting and fairly cheap too. There's ways to do an overland trip with a group if you find it a little daunting.
Australia - it's a whole continent in itself. Sure why would you want to come home? Also has some beautiful places like Fiji and other islands within some striking distance

One of the most fun things you could do is do your PADI courses and become a diving instructor on a beach in a beautiful part of the world and move around when seasons change to another beautiful island.

If politics don't worry you, you could enjoy a few months on a kibbutz in Israel and see the rest of the fascinating country at the end of it.
