    Hi,

How do you get about in the snow? Would love to head out in the hills only getting about in the car is near impossible.

Is a 4WD the only solution?

    Thanks.

i would say so, had to abandon my car near Chrone Woods last year, went down a hill but couldn't get up either side due to ice. eventually ended up in the ditch and had to wait for it to thaw and then pay a local farmer to pull me out with a tractor.

great crack though, the mountains were unbelieveable in the snow

Yup 4wd with snow chains would be your best bet , even then though you will be limited how far you will be able to travel on some of the higher approach roads to where you intend hiking, by snow drift/depth on the road.

You could also check what major roads are close to the mt you are going to, as usually they are well gritted, and you may be able to hike in from the road side.

The roads all the way from the city centre to Laragh were gritted today, so could drive to Laragh. Climbed brockagh Mountain from there. Snow is absolutely savage!

What about snow chains on a regular car? Anyone ever used them?

I wouldn't say 4wd is the only solution, sometimes Mother Nature won't even let one of them pass. Ideally I guess a snowmobile, but maybe sometimes you gotta take the attitude that if it can't be reached by car, that's a sign in itself!

Hehehe. I had opportunity of driving a snowmobile. It was FUUUN:D:D:D I've even started googling for those:D But i found only these Arctic Cat F7 snowmobiles from Norway :( And the price is not small :(
    BTW. I have a 4wd...and it's no help when road is a skating-rink.
