Questions about maynooth

Firstly I was looking at http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/life_and_style/education/sunday_times_university_guide/article4831988.ece

and it says that the unemployment levels for maynooth graduates is only 1% could this be true with us being in a recession.

My next question is about the computer facilities. I dont think I will need to use them, however I was walking into the open day and I seen this green shed that was in Bits labeled the computer center. Is that the only computer center?

If you dont know anyone there when going does it take long to make friends here??

Also I was told that its the "Gay" univeristy, is this true?

    What are the lecturers like?

    Thanks :P

    Hi,

I'm going to start off by saying I've no idea about graduate employment figures, but I'm sure The Times did their research (then again, that might be an old figure).

The computer centre on the south campus isn't the only computer room. There's the another one (called Long Corridor) on the south campus too, as well as one in the Arts' building and the Rye Hall PACR (public access computer room). As well as that, there's computers in the library, the foyer of the Callan building and a couple in the social area of the Arts' block (for your non academic needs).

When I started in Maynooth, I knew no one at all. It's quite common for that to happen, especially if you're coming from the west of the country. A lot of people won't know anyone either. You get to know people quite quickly, be it your housemates if you move to Maynooth, meeting people during the orientation week or in lectures. Clubs and societies are also a great way of getting to know people (in all colleges, not just Maynooth).

I've heard that from a lot of people too! It's true that Maynooth has a vibrant LGBT community and are a visible presence on campus, but in all my time here I've never felt like I was in a "gay" university. It's there if you want it, but it's not completely in your face if you're not interested.

As for lecturers, it really depends on the departments and subjects. I've had some that were clearly academically brilliant but weren't really interested in teaching. I've also had some really amazing, enthusiastic ones. Kinda like in school, there's a whole spectrum!

    Thanks.

When I said "Gay" I meant that there were a lot of LGBT's compared to the other Uni's.

Im actually from Dublin, I just won't know anyone (that I like) at the Uni. And for now I will be driving every day but I may decide to move to the campus.

How much do you like the Uni, are ya glad ya went there??

Do ya know if many people do the erasums year abroad?

    :P

As far as I know those graduate figures generally refer to graduates from a couple of years ago so that's probably why the figure is so low. Don't forget a lot of people who don't get a job go straight into a postgrad meaning they mightn't be accounted for another 2 or 3 years.

I knew 1 other person coming into first year. I'd gone to the Gaeltacht knowing no one and got on grand so I suppose I was used to it. It's all about how willing you are to put yourself out there and make friends. I was lucky that two of the guys I was living with in first year turned out to be my best friends in college and I still spend the whole time with them now in third year. This year I haven't been as lucky with the housemates but by going to Mantra/Bradys/Roost and to events in the SU or joining teams you can become friends with anyone and everyone.

Don't be afraid to put yourself out there. The first week of college I met some of my best friends and then others who I haven't seen or spoken to since. No skin off my back there's plenty of other people to meet and talk to

I've heard that aswell, only after I arrived here though! :P My housemate was like "welcome to gaynooth" and I was like whaaaa? :P Anyways, it supposedly has that reputation, but I haven't come across much to prove it :P In saying that I've only been here 3 months now but still :P

I didn't know a soul when I got here, and I've made some really good friends already, you'll be graaand XD I'm so happy I went here, my second choice was UCD and I don't think I could have coped with the size of the place! :P
