Scammers knocking on doors - be careful

Just a warning to a scam that a woman on my road fell victim to during the week, and I've heard it's doing the rounds in Dublin at the moment.

2 men in high-vis jackets with fake dublin city council id's knocked on the door in the morning and told her there was a water leak in the area and they needed to check the water pressure under the kitchen sink and upstairs. She was downstairs with 1 of them and the other raided every room upstairs looking for valuables he got away with jewellery and a small sum of money. The lad in the kitchen took a set of keys too.

They seem to be targeting the elderly more so, if you have any elderly parents or grandparents just make them aware of the scam. I told my own parents if they knock ask who they are from (they could say esb/gas/water/ntl/eircom/council/corporation/etc) and tell them you are going to give that organisation a quick telephone call to verify they are carrying out work in the area.

The helpful gardai in our area told her "they'll probably come back" Brilliant!
