    im in new york goin to ireland at xmas and have an out of date provisional licence [3rd one]issued in 2001 will the tax office issue me a new one without having to sit a theory test?

    no ya need to have passed a theory test within the last 4 years or else have a valid learners permit

    IIRC you have 5 years from the lapsing date on the last license, to renew it without needing a new theory test. You'll also need to show proof of applying for or failing a full test to renew it.

    You need proof that you FAILED your test in order to get your license renewed. Only in Ireland :D

    That actually does make sense though, no? They want to make sure that people are actually sitting a test rather than just doing bullshìt applications once in awhile.

    At least it's not like in the UK where your provisional licence is valid until your 70th birthday or until you pass the tests and exchange it for a full licence within 2yrs of passing.

    Now that is news to me! Obviously you must renew it every 10 years or so with a new pic?? Can't imagine being 70 with a picture of me still be 18!

    Yep, update the photo every 10yrs just like the full driving licence, the permission to drive for learning purposes remains valid.
