Beginners Painting Equipment etc.

    Hi Guys,

I'm looking into putting together a beginners painting equipment set for the OH as part of a Christmas present this year. She was quite into painting when she was younger, and I think she'd really like to get back into it, but just needs a little push in the right direction :)

I've noticed that she has an interest in canvas paintings, so think it would be nice to get her set up with everything she needs. I've picked up a few different size canvases, and some basic acrylic paints and brushes. Is there anything else that's needed equipment wise?

Also - are there any good DVD's/tutorials that I could buy or download which you'd recommend?

    Thanks in advance!

Sounds lovely - I think that a few bits and pieces is really nice and even though I normally don't advise vouchers, they are really handy when it comes to art supplies, the thought is there but there is just something about picking out bits and pieces that I absolutely love :)

As for books/tutorials - I find that the internet is a huge resource, but not just for downloading - there are some local groups that meet up every so often but are based around the internet, for example the Plein Eire group who have a few different regional groups, one in Dublin, one in Wexford/South East and there is one in the West also - so perhaps it would be nice to let her know that they are there. Groups like these are invaluable, outings where you meet other people of all skills who have the same interest - no cost - with feedback and discussion online. She can work up to her first outing by practising at home first! http://pleineire.ning.com/

Otherwise, I think it would be good to perhaps let her know if there are any classes or things going on in your area - to get someone back into painting isn't an easy feat, she may need the motivation of a class or an event like that mentioned above. Though that may just be me ;)

I'm sure she will love the gift :)

    Thanks Cork_girl, I'm hoping she does :)

I'll definitely be looking up classes in her area, and it's something that hadn't crossed my mind so thanks for the suggestion! This is all pretty new to me, so not entirely sure what the best way to learn would be and classes seem like a great idea.

Any opinion on paint by numbers sets? Would they be considered a bit childish, or a good way to get back into painting?

Hmm I really don't think that paint by numbers is a good idea, but that is just me - perhaps she would enjoy it. If you think she needs subjects to paint or ideas - then perhaps a book would be good. If she likes landscapes then perhaps "an introduction to...painting" style book - depending on the type of paints you have purchased. An alternative would be a photography book as opposed to just an "art book" with a variety of subjects that she could try out, though there would be no instruction!

No, not painting by numbers, its nearer to doing a jigsaw than painting!

If you wanted to go for something else may I suggest a couple of good brushes - ask for advice in an art shop. I don't know what sort of brushes you have got, but while they may well be fine, decent brushes make a lot of difference.

I agree a book would be a good idea too.
