It's almost certainly a virus. What antivirus software have you on your conmputer and do you know if it was up-to-date? Have you any idea what the name of the program was that showed the popup?

Okay we'll deal with McAfee later. Can you load Windows in 'Safe Mode with Networking'? To so this, keep tapping the <F8> key a couple of times a second while the machine is booting and you be presented with a menu. Select the 'Safe Mode with Networking' option and see if Windows loads. If it does load okay then download, install, update & run Malwarebytes and report back. Malware bytes will generate a log. If you can, save this log to the desktop and attach it so's we can have a look.

What box? Does the box have a name? Please describe step by step exactly what's happening. Is the problem with Malwarebytes happening while you're still in Safe Mode or did you just download Malwarebytes in Safe Mode and then try and run it in Normal mode?

It's hard to make any diagnosis until we know for sure what's happening.

Bingo.Alls back to normal. Thanks so much for your time and help.Iv downloaded malwarebytes and will be running it.Any advice you can give about this program would be appreciated. What was it you were saying about mcafee? Good stuff but the virus(es) might not be completely gone yet.

Do run Malwarebytes again now in both Safe Mode & Normal mode.

And then if I were you, I'd uninstall anything to do with McAfee and replace it with MSE (Microsoft Security Essentials).
