Politics Beers?

I know that things sometimes get contentious here, and posters are drawn from all over Ireland and beyond, but has there ever been a politics beers? It's that time of year, and it seems like a lot of other forums have or are planning beers in the next few weeks.

If there hasn't, has it been due to lack of interest? Lack of organization? Fears of barroom brawling? :p

    Anyway, I was just curious.

    Christ almighty.

Us lot are at each others throats sober, imagine what it would be like pished!

Actually, I'm of the opinion that beer is capable of solving all the worlds problems. So it might be a good idea.

It would be interesting to see a room divide politically and fill each corner outside of a graph :P

Personally I was envisioning some kind of Sharks and Jets-style showdown between libertarians and socialists, followed by a gender battle over round-buying quotas. The night would be capped off by a surprise appearance from Paul Gogarty which would immediately cause the mods to ban at least half of the attendees from the pub.

I'd be up for this, if only to see this at the end of an evening..

Drunkenly *hic* Are they my trousers up there?

Please note I simply said "has there ever been one?", not "I would like to organize one". ;)

And to the politics forum old-heads: has there ever been a politics beers?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 26,458 ✭✭✭✭gandalf

To the best of my knowledge no there hasn't. There used to be a boards beers so there was no need to organise a specific one. I normally attend one via one of the private forums on boards if I attend any at all.

Nah Gogarty wouldn't show, the pub wouldn't let him bring his kid in to hide behind :)

I'd buy Scofflaw a cordial while he sits there amused.

I'd offer to buy Donegalfella a drink but I know he doesn't take handouts, he'd insist on going to the bar himself.

And then I'd probably sit in the corner with jmayo and Liam Byrne, sharpening pool cues for the arrival of the unmentionables.

Oh and I'd definitely wear a burqa, just to put everyone at ease :)

I think as a fair compromise, DF can pay for 60% of my drink and put 40% in a fund for later in the night. I'll pay for the rest by borrowing money from some dodgy guy in the corner who none of us know on the condition he gets to choose the drinks and that will be my round covered for the night.

If we all do this, nothing can go wrong. I suggest people get in early as we'll be going up the alcohol ladder as the night goes on and you won't be able to catch up :P

Isn't there a No Politics No religion clause when Alchohol is involved?

I broke the rule for all of 3 minutes once and a 60 year old man had to be dragged out of the pub for trying to beat me to death with a bottle :o I don't even remember what I said.

It's there for a reason. I worked in a bar alongside a fanatically racist, BNP co-worker. We got into a discussion about politics which nearly ended with a fistfight.
(although I was always told it was "No politics, no sex, no religion")

I'd be well up for a Politics beers. Well, well up for one. Although I'd find it really tricky to make it down to Dublin.

If anyone wants to have a politics beers in Galway, I'd be happy to attend.

    I love that video :)

We're a bit too geographically dispersed for a Politics beer to be practical.

Unless we hold it somewhere nice and central, like Westport.

    <_<

Sounds good, then all back to yours after the pub closes?

I'm going to turn up and tell everyone that I'm Denerick. I'd buy OhNoYouDidn't a drink. Then drink it in front of him before he gets the chance to taste it. Just think of the face.

    Good idea OP.

I think things change subsequently though between online and in-person interaction. Always interesting to put a face to the online account though. It changes things is all I´m saying.
I would like to attend if in the country at the time.

I was thinking Iceland myself. Or Bermuda.

Yemen is also optional, it'd be a good laugh explaining it to the TSA
