How to Pull Off a Trenchcoat?

I've had a black trenchcoat (looks like the one in the middle here) for about a year and a half now and wore it only once to a wedding. I don't wear skirts or dresses at all, so I've not had an excuse to wear it.

I plan on investing in a pair of skinny jeans, boots and accessories, with the blustery winter weather it'll do me better than my current short jacket and I want to get some use out of it it, but I don't really know what to do! I've never been particularly dressy, more into the ripped jeans/rock look, but I wanna give it a go.

So what kind of boots/accessories should I be looking at to go with a plain black trench? What are some interesting ways to dress it up?

Any tips would be great! I'm hopeless :pac:

I'd wear it with biker boots, something like this:

For accessories rockin' scarf could jazz it up for you, if you feel like you don't look yourself.

If you're worried about the cold, wear your normal ripped jeans with coloured leggings underneath. Its warm, and I think it looks cool!

You can wear them with most clothes I think. I wear mine with skinny jeans. But it's not really a winter coat. They are more suited to spring/autumn. I never wear long boots with mine as I only wear boots in winter.

Well, currently all I have are flares and a pair of black chucks (my only pair of shoes!), and that combination doesn't seem to go well under a trench coat. And it's actually a pretty heavy coat, despite it being thin-ish, and currently it's all I've got that'd be warm enough.

I'm just not sure it'd suit me in flats, though. A cool pair of boots would be nice, but I'm not sure of what style.. should I go black? Colourful? Ankle? Calf? :pac:

Personally, I think trenches have quite a masculine cut, but feminised by clinching in the waist and they are quite clean cut. So I'd wear more feminie clothing with it like ballet pumps, heels or *some* ankle boots (I'm think high shearling ones). I think you definitely need to go softer rather than heavy and chunky. I think knee high boots are a no no as the length of the trench just wouldn't work with it. I think a camel tone shoe would work best with black, I wouldn't do too much black, if your bottoms are not black, then black shoes would be fine. If you have a good pair of flares (nice ends and all) then you could just wear the flares over boots.

The only piece I might do chunky is the scarf, a nice chunky scarf in a grey or again camel tone.

I do also think a trench is a Spring and Autumn coat and thats why find it difficult to style in the winter.
