This will push more people into taking chances and using out of town addresses for insurance purposes particularly the younger generation that are already screwed.

Quinn Direct is blaming an rise in crime and accidents for the increase. I would say its more than likely that they are trying to recoup some of the money that they squandered on the property market.

Legislation should be brought in against extortion particularly in this current economic climate.

One insurance company, one policy holder, hardly the end of the world. Pretty poor story from a facts and figures point of view. Quinn were pricing themselves too low to start with and didn't have the cash reserves to cope should they have needed to make big payouts, this is the reason the company is still under administration.

I hate to cool the righteous indignation, but the article gives a figure of 10%.

There are many circumstances which could have led to this. For all we know half the cars on their street were robbed this year. Take what newspapers say with a pinch of salt...

That said a lot of people have said Quinn have upped their prices and will not budge on it. No sense in legislating against it tho; its a buyers market and people are free to go whereever they choose for insurance, and someone will be cheaper than Quinn.

shock horror, a made up a Rtdh headline isn't at all true?!

'One Dubliner claims he was hit with a 40% rise' doesn't really have the same ring though.
One driver who lives in Dublin's north inner city complained his premium with Quinn Direct shot up by over 40pc in 12 months.

About 5 years ago, I moved from Dublin to Kerry and a few months later, when I renewed my insurance, I was pleasantly surprised to find that my insurance almost halved!! Same car, same cover, etc. Everything was the same except an extra years ncb and a change of address. So, I figure if I had moved to Dublin, the opposite might well have happened, and this was long before bust/recession/ administration etc.

    Just my 2 cents worth.

Last year i went to renew my insurance on my 316 E30,,it jumped from 430 to 920.
When I challenged the insurance company they told me it was down the car exceeding the 20 year old mark,in their eyes it was deemed unsafe for the road,,
Naturally I insisted that I was going to move my policy and report them to the ombudsman as the car had a valid NCT and therefore was fit to be on the road,One hour later I received a call apologising to me and my policy stayed the same.

Once your premium bottoms out due to age and/or NCB it would be very rare for your premium not to take a hike. Theres a significant number of people who just accept a renewal so it would be stupid for the insurance company not to try it (from their pov). Of the rest that do check most will take the lowest premium, which may often include the company that just tried to up their premium so the compnay gets more business back.

I've just got a very good quote (imo) of €460 to put my Xantia back on the road using just the NCB I've built up as a nameddriver on the missus policy as I still have mine used on my van.

Quinn have upped my policy everytime on the auto renewal notice.
Takes 5 minutes to search their competitors, find the lowest comparable quote, ring quinn to say I'm leaving and they magic up a new similar price to the competitors.

It's in their interest for folk to be lazy and possibly evening herald readers.

...ah, yes...welcome to the '80's. Next we'll be insuring things under our (doting) mother's names.............with us as named driver's........

    Aldi's car park will be full of blue-rinse-ers driving GT-R's etc.....the waggin's.......

You don't want to acknowledge that as truth because, deep down in places you don't talk about at the Green Party, you want me on that road, you need me on that road. We use words like freedom, enjoyment, sport and community. We use these words as the backbone of a life spent instilling those values in our families and loved ones. You use them as a punch line. I have neither the time nor the inclination to explain myself to a man who rises and sleeps under the tax revenue and the very freedom to spend it that I provide, and then questions the manner in which I provide it. I would rather you just said "thank you" and went on your way. Otherwise I suggest you pick up a bus pass and get the ********* ********* off the road”

As I posted in another thread here, I've been shopping around for insurance for the last month as mine is up at the end of Nov.. I understood premiums were going up, mine went up €100 as I moved closer to the city centre in Dublin so I shopped around and fair enough its the best quote with the benefits and level of cover I wanted.. so I'm happy to stay with them..

However the range of quotes I was getting was absolutely crazy, some started around the mid €500 mark and then up to mid €700's.. however one company actually quoted me €1580!!!!
Like wtf?? So I rang the office as I got the quote online and maybe it was an error.. he went through all the details and the quote was correct but some of the excuses he came out with were bloody crazy..

Apparently a private secure underground carpark with 24 hour security and electronic gates is the same as parking your car on the street!!!

Oh and the fact that I have a named driver who has an EU license and 9 years of claims free driving, 3 in Ireland (and 3 years no claims bonus in Ireland), is a major risk factor, but not to any other insurance company in Ireland???

Oh and the best one, I am driving less as I'm closer to work and everything else, so I walk more, so there is a better chance my car could be stolen as I'm not using it everyday..

Needless to say I laughed him off the phone..

Some companies are literally taking the piss and as someone said, trying to recoup the money they lost in bad investments etc.. Surely there is some ombudsman or someone who can kick these guys into touch..
