I'm due a replacement for my trusty old Dell Inspiron 1300.

Are the latest Dell laptops good value for what you get or is there better to be found in Harvey Norman, PC World, Dixons etc?

I'm just needing it for the internet etc......nothing too advanced needed.
BTW, I don't want one of those Eircom Broadband bundled offers.

Any advice from informed folks appreciated.

    John.

You would probably get better answers here in the laptop forum. Don't get a dell vostro anyway, had one and quality was terrible!

If you are buying in a bricks and mortar shop in Limerick you should also try Soundstore, I find them fairly good on price and service.

plus they are irish, i find it so hard to understand the amount of locals buying dell, when they fecked off and left some many jobless.

I have a Dell Studio and its a piece of crap, only just over a year old, battery ****ed, power cord faulty, touchpad is actually unusable, fails to start up properly half the time. I've been nothing but careful since I took it out of the box, you'd swear I was throwing if off the walls the way its acting up. Funny cos I had an Inspiron before it and it did very well for 4 yrs.

Give PC World your business, they're bound to have a good deal for you

I've had a dell vostro 6400 (budget business laptop) for the last four years. Still going fine. One replacement battery, one replacement charger.

Saying that, I'd certainly shop around before my next one. Work buys all from dell, but I should be able to convince them to get it from where I say.

Bought a Sony Vaio in Savins on O Connell Street recently, no complaints.

+1 on Soundstore if you have to buy in a local store. They may not have quite as big a range of products there, but generally they stock the better mainstream models rather than just stocking loads of different models.

Plus their prices are generally decent for a bricks and mortar store, with staff that are not as prone to trying to BS as some of the ones in the DSG stores and Harvey Norman.

Dell can go fish as far as I am concerned.

Apple from CompuB is the way to go.

They are still one of the biggest employers in the city. There are over 1,000 working in Raheen. Would you have bought a Dell if it was twice the price of others but still built in Limerick? Ireland just too expensive for manufacturing.

As for the OP's question, most computers will have the same components inside with no one brand better than the other. Call in to PC world and see which one you like the look off. Then shop around including online to see where you can get the best price.

    Don't buy Dell, simple as.

If you are looking for a good build laptop Acer are a brilliant brand - I'd recommend buying in PC World/Currys as they are the same company they sometimes make their prices 'compete' to make them look lower, but I've found them best for value and customer service in the past. And if in there, tell them you don't want the norton antivirus that goes for anywhere you go - its ****.
