Media's endless obsession with markets

Listening/reading/watching the various media orgs in the last week, I have noticed the obsession of interviewers about how the ‘markets’ are viewing our government’s current measures. I think it only highlights how the citizens of this country are now looked upon as second best in the eyes of the various owners, producers, editors in the likes of RTE, Independent Newspapers and News Talk

At least one exception to the rule right now is Carl O’Brien of the Irish Times, currently publishing a great series of personalised pieces on various peoples’ experiences with mental health. Of course an issue like mental health will always be here, but it is especially timely with our growing feeling of anger and powerlessness as citizens these days. I will also give some kudos to Vincent Browne, who will from time-to-time accentuate the concerns of ordinary people in his questions to politicians. However, they appear from my viewing to be minority media voices.

I’m not factoring the financial sections of various newspapers/stations into my criticism here, they are ‘meant’ to approach their coverage from a shareholder’s perspective just like the Financial Times or Wall Street Journal abroad.

With depression and suicide rates likely to grow from our government and bankers blatant greed and spoofing for several years, it is time for media voices to realise that the concerns of faceless twerps in suits abroad should be toned down in their coverage. Meaningless statements such as the ‘national interest’ and ‘are where we are’ should be dismissed for the PR spin they are too!

Much like the great delay of reporting church abuse, are they going to fool 'Middle Ireland' again in pretending there is no wider problem from the madness thats resulted from elite circles of government and finance?

Will the self examination ever happen though? Any thoughts?
