driving on a foreign license

    Hi,

If someone living in Ireland has an EU license (French, Polish, whatever), do they get points put on their license when they're caught speeding (for example).

What about more serious offences like drink driving? If caught drink driving, can the Irish cops suspend their license, or bar them off Irish roads?

    Thanks

You don't get points for your foreign licence, but whenever you commit any offence in Ireland that attract penalty point, it's recorded in the system, and in case in the future you change your licence to Irish licence, all point that you already collected will be written down to your Irish licence straight away.

With more serious offences, court might ban you from driving in Ireland.
But they can't take your licence, so you still will be able to drive anywhere else outside Ireland.

Except the UK which we have signed a cross border enforcement of disqualifications for speeding, drink driving etc..

Thats very true and i dont understand hows that :D

In most EU countries they take your license away if youve done some serious offence on theyr roads and send it to your homecountry. Ireland is wonderland :)

They should just have kept the system whereby you had to exchange your licence for one of the country of residence, stops all this non-points nonsense.

Same across the whole EU, if you get Points in Germany you get points in Germany, if you get points in Ireland you get points in Ireland.

They don't get 'put' on your license, they get put on record.

Any state can ban you from driving within its borders if you've violated its rules.

Even if they do, then you can just go to the licence authority office in country where that licence was issued and pick it up. So it makes no difference really.
But don't worry.. EU is working already in unifying licences, penalty points and offences all over EU.

Hows that ... If your no longer resident there ?
I suppose you could make a false declaration and say your living at someones address ;)

As far as i know it doesnt work in Estonia where are one of the most strict roadrules, if you got cought drunk in Germany and your license was taken away, you will be without your license for the period Germany decided.

Many estonians are working in Finland in these days and a plenty of them were cought drink driving, theyr license were taken away and they tried to get duplicate in Estonia, saying they lost theyr license.
All of them were cought and they got extra summons for that.

Information moves faster within EU than we can even image ...

A driving licence is an official government document belonging to the issuing country (like a passport), are you saying that licence documents are physically seized and withheld by the foreign country?

The procedure here is that when you get a driving ban, a big not-allowed-to-drive-here mark goes against your record, and your license card/document is stamped as 'endorsed' but not withheld (afaik).

Yes driving license were and are seized in most EU countries, its NOT like a passport and its NOT governments property like your passport or ID card is otherwise ALL people should have it without any exams ;) Did you do some exams to get your passport ?

Well, is my forklift license as well governments property ? :D
Dont tell me its different to driving license, just most countries do not accept it (forklift license) as ID.

So they take it off from you and send it to the country u live originally. VRO office in Ireland or similar ...

It looks like you are misinformed.
Driving licence is issued by government, and it's governments property, and can't be just taken by any other state.
