    i was trying to install updates on vista and this came up. i googled it and downloaded a kasperky link which found a rootkit error. i followed instructions and it said to reboot computer which i did but now i just get a blue creen with info for a few seconds and then it reboots again. i cant even get to my desktop in safe mode. i tried the f8 method for system restore but this wont work. any ideas

    If you have the Vista installation disc, then have a look here and try the /FixMbr option.

    no dont have it and doubt i will be able to find it. It was that kaspersky link that caused the problem. i saw on another forum that some one else had a similar problem.

    i cant use me laptop to get on internet. could i dowload it to a memory stick and use that some way

    You'll be downloading a disk image and burning it to a CD/DVD anyway. Then you'll boot from that CD/DVD.

    if i restored the harddrive to its factory setings in the repair window would i lose all my data. just trying to think of a quick fix. i dont even have a cd and i never burnt anything. im not the most computer literate

    Yes unless it indicates otherwise. Different manufacturers might have diffrent methods.

    You'll need to do it on someone else's machine. Most modern computers can burn DVD's. It's not difficult honestly.

    While you're at it, download a Linux Live CD like Ubuntu and burn that to a CD too. You can use that to backup your data to a USB drive before you do any damage.
