Fear of others perceptions

Just read a piece in yesterdays NY Times by Paul Krugman and it got me to thinking what others outside of our little nation are saying and how they perceive our situation. This morning I spoke to a colleague (whom I am now seriously worried about) who has found himself in a financial dilemma as he set about building his first home. But his greatest cause for concern was how his failure to complete the building would appear to others.
It must be an Irish trait because our government appear to be suffering from this affliction - F* the foreign bankers, if they were happy to lend the knowing the risk then they should take the hit.
