hope someone has an idea of what's goin on here.

havin terrible problems with dhw and ch system.

cylinder is not heating the water to any great degree and runs out very quickly. you couldn't have a bath from it.

having to bleed most of our rads every day and getting quite a bit of air out too. one rad won't heat at all and now a further one is not heating. live in single storey dwelling.

problems started last year when we had some work done that involved moving the cylinder and tanks etc. it was partially resolved by contractor at the time but when problems developed later we were unable to get him back.

    help.

Is it an open or closed system?

if its open, how high are the rads at the top in comparison to the F&E tank?

not sure. excuse the ignorance here but what's the difference.there's an oil boiler and burner in a boiler house. tanks in the attic and cylinder in hotpress. there's a vent pipe coming out under the soffit.

i have the boiler temp set at about 60 - 70 in the boilerhouse. there is one thermostat in the hall set at 23, and a timer which only controls the heating. i don't know how to control water temp.

Last time I saw this there was an AMAZING amount of gunk in the pipes going into the cylinder. So even though my rads were hot the hot water wasn't. If you have an open system try pouring some chemicals into it.

Yeah, you could get a sludge remover and then an inhibitor, but you will need to drain the system, or remove a fair bit of water to get the chemicals through.

OP, its an open system that you have. Has anything been changed / moved etc in relation to the system in recent times? How old is the system?

Check your expansion tank in the attic, the ballcock could be stuck closed and the water has evaperated, this would lead to air in the rads etc.

"having to bleed most of our rads every day and getting quite a bit of air out too".

This means that the hot water circulation system has a leak somewhere.

This is bad - you need to find the leak.

    hi all,

thanks to all for the advice.

    update.....

turned off all rads then only turned on cold ones. then turned on others. this worked a treat and we were very toasty:) so i'm really hoping it's not a leak.

the sludge suggestion is i suppose a good possibility. is the resolution to this ie chemical flush DIY'ble?

but alas when heating was turned on again later.....same problem with cold rads. very annoying.

fingers, the system is in about 13 years although some rads are older, but as i said we had some work done last year and the cylinder, tanks and pipework had to be relocated. there were a couple of new rads added too, as well as some motorised valves, the function of which is beyond my capacity to understand.

These problems been happening since the work was done?

Draining and flushing the system is diy enough-able, but I doubt that thats just the problem. There could be issues with the motorized valves either.

Can you post a pic of the hot press and see if it helps?
