    Hi,

can anyone recommend a budget player with 5.1 output?
I have the speakers - just need to swap out the dvd player for a blu ray one.

Or recommend a upscaling dvd player with dvi and 5.1?

Your recommendations welcome. I've searched - but am overwhelmed and also surprised at the lack of choice at the same time....

    Cheers!:)

    It doesnt work like that.

From the Above , you bought an all in one set. What "looked" to be a DVD player with 5 speakers attached.
What that really is , is a combined amplifier and DVD player , and the speakers were attached to the outputs of its internal amp.

5.1 analog outs on the other hand , the type of thing you find on Blu ray players , are not amplifier outputs , they are line level outputs and connecting speakers directly to them will give you nothing but silence.

5.1 analog outs , as found on the much more expensive Blu Ray players , are meant to be connected to an AV receiver.

In any case , the impedance of the speakers that you get with all in one packages is usually such that its highly unlikely those speakers will work with anything else other than the unit it came with.

Thanks for the info - saved me getting into a disappointing situation.

So what's the best bet? All in one Blu ray home theater set? (economy wise).

Although to be honest it's not often that my dvd surround sound really knocks my socks off. The dvd producers seem to be a bit on the lazy side ;-)

what inputs are on your current dvd unit? if it has an optical input just buy a basic bluray player and put an optical cable from the bluray to dvd and away ye go
