I hope it doesn't become a regular thing. While I'm not a big fan of the speed camera's, the guys in the back of them are just doing their job like anyone else.

Attempted murder of someone just doing there job really isn't on.

I hope that nobody else agrees with it either.

I can find no source for this on rte.ie, maybe someone could post a link? Ninja edit, linky:
    http://www.rte.ie/news/2010/1126/dundalk.html

It is despicable behavior in my opinion and will only serve to polarize opinion on the matter. Action like that is typically reactionary and won't achieve anything!

Just heard it on the rte news now.

Jesus, they could have killed the lad in the back of it. gobsh1tes

They're going to have to fit external video cameras on all the Gatso vans to safeguard the drivers. Either that or put a second man riding shotgun.

Last time it was a Garda van, next time could proove fatal.

    Attempted murder in my book.

    Fair play, sound common sense.

But what's not to like about speed/cameras?

Despite what the uninformed sceptics say, including in this forum, speed/safety cameras save lives on the road. The evidence is clear.

Such utter nonsense, but lets not derail the thread.

I dont know much about the new cameras, but traditionally the cameras/garda checks were usually placed in a position to make money, not to save lives. Eg stillorgan dual carriage way/M50/M7

They're a cash cow desguised as a road safety initiative

Please -- I am not attempting to derail this thread, as suggested earlier.

But can you not see that there's an association between anti speed/safety camera rhetoric and the kind of anti speed/safety camera behaviour as seen in the Dundalk arson incident?

In the current economic climate, any attempt at painting the speed/safety cameras as a stealth tax/cash cow/money-making operation/profit-before-safety scam is bound to incite irrational hatred.

I repeat: the evidence for the life-saving benefits (and cost effectiveness) of speed/safety cameras is clear.

Im not for a second condoning what happened in Dundalk (They should have waited until the Operator wasent in the van:D)

And yes I agree that when set up properly they can help to reduce speeding, but in my experience the priority of the RSA & Gards is to increase revennue through catching people out, doing 65Km on 60km dual carraige way etc.

I dont know much about these new cameras, but it true that they have stratigecally been positioned in accident blackspots then fair enough, but I dont trust the relevant authorities will do this

FFS will a mod please remove this troll? It's beyond a joke at this stage.

As for the van, while I wish no harm to the fellas in them earning a wage I do hope they all get vandalized to an extent that makes the whole project un-profitable.

A mobile speed van has been completely destroyed in an arson attack in Dundalk, Co Louth this morning.
The incident happened just before 5am when the van was carrying out a traffic survey on the Dundalk to Carrickmacross road.
Gardaií say the front window of the van was broken. It is not yet clear how the fire was started.
The driver, who was uninjured in the incident, was alerted by the smoke.
    Gardaí are appealing for witnesses.

Hope they catch these ****ers soon.

Incitement to hatred and criminal behaviour.

Some counter evidence from research done by ICM in the UK.
Speed cameras have triggered at least 28,000 crashes since 2001, according to new research.

I had hoped it would be obvious, but any further encouragement of/incitement to criminal damage or, indeed, attempted murder will result in a ban.

Enough, take some time to learn the rules. And on that note I think we'll wrap this mess up.

I was wondering how long it would take for something like this to happen alright. Absolute scum. It worries me that that anyone would consider it worth risking a mans life for the sake of avoiding an €80 fine and 2 penalty points...
