Will prob get all sorts of reaction but came from 2 fellas I know working inside both banks and fairly high up in 1 of them.
Revealing anymore I cannot do but lets just say they said now its all out of their hands and dept of finance are calling the shots as of right now today on all aspects within the bank.
They (dept of finance) told them that this was the best option to settle the markets a bit

Forgive me for my ignorance but, how on earth will closing the banks cause anything other than widespread panic?

What difference will closing the branches for a day make?
I can still move all my money online and take out as much as I can at the atm.

I just went to the ATM. Instead of 50 quid it spit out a picture or Angela Merkel saying "ver is zeee monehh!"

course its not, if they were calling an emergency bank hol (alarm bells ringing at that already) there would be more notice than this, and he would have some factual, checkable information to back it up with

Bank holiday or day of mourning. Very causious about random rumour, but also talk of IMF deal signed on sunday. We should be asking the Argies for advice on saturday rather than trying to clobber them.

There would be absolutely no notice of this, any notice would be the start of a run.

Note I'm not saying the OP is correct though.

And you think closing the banks with zero notice would actually prevent a run? Jesus it would almost certainly cause a run on tuesday.

It was strange though on was it the last night or night before on primie time/frontline one of the ministers said at the end of the program that the customer deposits in the baks will be safe...????

Right, that much i get, but, what stops the run the following day?

How will this cause the "dust to settle"?

The real story, is that EVERY Monday for the next century is cancelled. Friday are also cancelled, as its pension day. One way of cutting the cost of the OAP. Every morning is cancelled, as the off licences are closed. Enda Kenny will renegotiate this issue however.

Is the match not on Sunday?

/hurriedly runs to check lest weekend shopping plans be ruined prior to the atms shutting down

Would be a whole lot of disruption for no good reason

    Scary thought.

We Irish are after all very panicky...about everything.

The perception alone of a run in progress among a small number of people, even if it was 100% fictional, could cause a nationwide cascade effect that otherwise (sans headless-chickenism) would not have occured.
