Hey. DVD player just went kaput but someone in the house has a slim PS2. If I connect an external harddrive into the USB ports would I be able to load movies? Or if I were to burn them onto DVD R/RW would they work on the PS2? Its original, not modded as far as I know. Thanks for any help.

Contrary to the above, it is possible with a soft-modded PS2. Link

The soft-mod is very easily done, have a look into it. It's all memory card based and no expertise is needed.

I was looking into this awhile ago without buying any new devices don't you need to mess with the sensors for swapping out a real game for a copied version of it with the some extra files.

That's the method I used originally yes. However, once you have an exploited PS2 you can just re-create the exploit on another memory card thats used for another console. I made two copies of the exploit, one thats tied to my console, and other open exploit on a spare memory card I have, which can be used to duplicate onto another memory card. So if you want to post me a spare, blank memory card OP, I'll happily install the Free McBoot exploit onto it for you.

It works on the Slims alright, only difference is with the slims you can't use the network adapter & an internal hdd.

Varik - I'm not sure, the installation instructions on the Free McBoot website don't list it as a method, despite listing every other method.
