Burnt Discs or Connecting External HDs to Wii

Hey. DVD player just went kaput but someone in the house has a wii. If I connect an external harddrive into the USB ports would I be able to load movies? Or if I were to burn them onto DVD R/RW would they work on the wii? Thanks for any help. Edit: Its original, not modded as far as I know.
