    Hi,

I have had the sl-65 system for the last 4 years, and all was well until today when the remote didnt work, ....so changed the batteries, but no....still erratic behaviour.. It wont even switch off at the box anymore...i have to use the switch at the back. Has anyone had the same erratic function problem, or has the box just ran its course??

    Thanks, Paul

I had the exact same problem with my one, its still in use in one of the other rooms. But yes it got very erratic, anytime I'd push the 'Favorites' button it would ask if i wanted to take a picture of the screen! Or if I tried to turn the volume up it would mute it, I think the remote has just run its course, it's still usable with just a little but of frustration!

It may not be the remote. The SL65 has power supply issues that arise over time. You might also try cleaning the remote receive sensor on the box front panel- if dirty, it can cause irratic infra red signals to be received.

Try testing your remote this way:

Turn on a radio/hifi to to an unused quiet frequency on the AM band with the volume turned up.
Point your remote, with any button held down, close up to the radio.
If the remote is working, you should hear a steady, regular, fast blipping sound from the radio.
If not, or the blipping sound is irregular and patchy, you'll know the remote is faulty.

    OR

Turn on the camera feature on your mobile phone.
Point the remote into the camera with a button held down.
You should be able to see the remote's infra-red LED flashing steadily as a white light on your camera image.

    ;)

Silvercrest SL 65 Digital Sat System is on special Thursday 2nd Deceber in Lidl.

    http://www.lidl.ie/ie/home.nsf/pages/c.o.20101202.p.Digital_Sat_System

    Is this any good?

I'm just using rabbits ears and have 4 stations so would love an improvement.. Not looking for anything very high tech.

If it lasted 4 years I'd be happy.

    Any comments from users? :)

As advertised the setup would be ideal for the british Freesat Channels.

I have found the system to be basic but very reliable. Take time in setting it up and you will be pleased with it. All the bits are provided, good value.

    Cheers thanks..

When you say Bristish Freesat Channels does that mean:

    BBC1 and 2 etc
    Channel 4
    ITV's

    ????

Can I still get Irish channels through this?

I won't be installing it, I am going to bribe a man to do it :p

    Hi,

Yes it wil get all the ones that are listed on Freesat with the exception of the 3 or 4 HD channels, no great loss.

Sorry foxinsox i hit the send button to soon.
Continuing reply. No matter which of your friends you bribe to install the setup they or it will not get the Irish channels, they require a terrestrial tuner, the Silvercrest is a Satellite receiver.
You would need to get a combination receiver or settle for the satellite channels with the setup you have at present

Thanks so much for all your help.. :)

I think I'll get it anyway..

Freesat would still be better than the 4 I have..

All the Lidl sat receivers are horrid compared with a out of contract Sky box or a Freesat box.

They are overpriced for what they are. A similar Philex is cheaper.

I agree that a Freesat box is a better option, if the OP can afford it. Otherwise there is absolutely nothing wrong with the LIDL box. Its big advantage over an out of contract Sky box is that you are not stuck with an EPG full of scrambled channels, shopping channels, and other drivel.

    To the OP...

I used an SL65 as a second satellite receiver for some time and I had no problems with it. Its an OK basic receiver and is a big step up from four channels.

I gave it away eventually as I bought a Humax Freesat PVR.
(The big advantage of a Freesat box is the 7 day Programme Guide.
However, I still use Aldi and LIDL boxes for bedrooms.)

Sky box has up to 50 favorites.

If you lose a channel or two on the SL65 you rescan and get all the junk back and have to delete it again on a horrid user interface. Most people don't know about scanning one transponder etc.

Also at this stage an HD box even for non-HD TV is a good idea as the downsampled HD will be better than SD transmission.
