Deciding on android based phone for christmas - SGS or DHD

Hey there. It's getting close to christmas and I'm still not quite sure whether I should go for the HTC Desire HD or Samsung Galaxy S, and was wondering if you guys could help me decide.

I was originally going to go for the SGS; the S-AMOLED, Hummingbird processor and the TV out all sounded great. However, I've been hearing about various issues with it, such as broken GPS and delayed updates.

I then considered the DHD; the S-LCD screen should be pretty good, I would consider HTC more established on Android and the new HTC Sense is apparently a lot better than Samsung's custom interface. It also has a bigger (but not too big, in my opinion) screen.

I'm essentially torn between the two.

The things I'll be doing with the phone will involve GPS, me doing a lot of reading/watching videos and listening to music. I'm not afraid of modifying anything, so if there is a custom fix for any issues (eg. GPS on the SGS) then I'd consider it a non-issue.

So, with all that, could you guys recommend which I should go for, and tell me your experiences with either phone?

    Thanks a lot!

The Desire HD is definitely for you, better build quality, better software, bigger screen for your videos.

HTC were also very quick getting the Android 2.2 OS out unlike Samsung who still haven't released an official one.

I've played with both. So overall I'm another vote for the Desire HD.

    Major downsides to the SGS
    - can be very laggy requiring it to be rooted and apply a third party fix. I know you say you wouldn't consider it an issue. It's a well documented problem and it's been around for a while and Samsung haven't released an official fix. That's an issue to me.
    - Kies to update the phone. What's that all about. The Desires update over an internet connection. No PC and crappy software required. Kies software is crap. For the first couple of weeks Kies wouldn't detect my phone. Then for some reason (that I don't know about) it started to work.
    - Slow to update to 2.2. I'm still waiting on 2.2 on the one I have. It's not a major issue as the device has loads of memory so Apps2SD is not a huge requirement and it has an app for internet tethering, so the only real thing that's missing on mine is Flash. However 2.2 has been out for a while now and it's still only trickling out to the users. Will it be the same when 2.3 comes out?

If you hold the two of them side by side the screen on the SGS is more vibrant. However if you're using either seperately both the devices have great screens.

The HTC Sense seems like a better UI than the TouchWiz interface. It's only my opinion though, both work fine. I've no idea why TouchWiz decided to use a few mm at the top of the screen to show you which pane you're on. It's totally unnecessary. This means you can fit less on the Galaxy home screen than you can on the Desire HD home screen. In the Apps list the HD is able to sort all of your apps alphabetically when you've installed them. The Galaxy can't when you're in Grid mode (which I prefer) which is annoying to me.
I did install Launcher Pro (it's like the HTC Sense UI) but it went laggy on me after a couple of weeks.

The Samsung has Swype built in for the keyboard. When I first used it I hated it but now I can type much quicker. You can't officially get it for the Desire HD. It's still in closed Beta.

The SGS has the capability for you to get a cable to plug it into your TV. If that was important to you it might push you to the Galaxy. I haven't played with that though. It is a cool feature but if you're never going to use it don't buy it just because it can do that.

The SGS is a great phone (if it's not affected by the lag) but so is the Desire HD (and you don't have to mess about with that).

If you flash your SGS to 2.2 you will have no GPS problems.

I have a SGS and I like it. Flashed to 2.2 and OCLF applied and it runs pretty smooth.

However... I'd still be pretty tempted by the Desire.
