Slamming wipers - Astra

    Hi,

I was wondering if someone knows what this is. Sorry if it is slightly confusing but I've tried describing it as best I can :-)

Interval setting: The right wiper slams against the A-pillar on the right side and then go back to stop like 10 cm up from the bottom (both wipers) on the interval "turn". Once the cycle starts again they go back Down to the bottom and then all the way up to slam without stopping and then back again to the 10cm from the bottom position.

Continuous setting: Still slam but go to the bottom.

I have to time it really exact to get them to stop at the bottom whatever setting i disengage from.

Anyone seen this before? Will I have to replace the motors or is this something that can be adjusted? It is really really annoying.

    Car is a 2000 Astra 3 door.

Take off the arms and reposition them.If that doesn't work the linkage must be worn.

    Wrong size wiper blade perhaps?

Wiper motors, in general, can develop these symptoms after being overloaded when the driver either uses the wipers to clear snow or the blades are frozen solid on the screen.

If one is lucky it just slipped spindle, but in this case OP I agree it sounds like you're looking for a new motor. Also check the mechanism for wear as it should not be possible for the wipers to hit A pillar if they reach the proper parking position at other end of the swing.

Well, a lot of wiper blades differ in size between the driver side blade and the passanger side blade. For example, on my own car the sizes are 23 inch and 20 inch. Obviously, if you fitted a wiper blade which was too long, it would catch the A-pillar everytime. I happened me years ago on a previous car when I was given the wrong wiper blades by the Parts Dept. Just thought it might be a suggestion for the op to ensure that they have the correct size blades fitted.

Edit: According to the site below, the correct wipers for a 2000 Astra are driver's side 20 inch and passanger side 19inch.
