Leaving the country for the weekend and don't want to get charged loads for roaming, do I just turn off data roaming or do I need to do more than that?

That should do it, but I knock off Internet data too, as I am a fraidy cat! In England last week, and could not access data until that roaming switch was set to "on".

Yup. If you're with vodafone you can use your data allowance in the UK but ring to confirm maybe. I never get charged anyway

As posted, just knock the data roaming switch off. You're fine to use wi-fi, it's totally separate but using the 3G abroad will cost you an absolute bomb if you're on the usual Irish ripoff data plans. Get a hotel with free wi-fi if you can.

I travel a bit for business, last time I checked with O2 they were charging between 2 and 5 euro per megabyte of data on foreign networks, which is absolutely scandalous. Your iPhone will automatically check for and download mails and notifications all day long if you leave it set as normal. You could come back to a bill of over 100 quid just for getting a few mails with attachments or whatever.

BTW, in case weren't aware, you can just set your iPhone to "airplane mode" if you just want to deactivate the phone features but use all the other stuff like apps, iPod, etc.
