You're a hell of a lot cheaper than similar AR's, like GF for instance. What's the catch?:)

It's a real AR, not like GF, ROAR etc. No catch, just tremendous fun. Ivan has a super team of volunteers, which presumably helps him keep costs as low as he can.

    What’s the catch?
Simple there is none, here’s the deal.

CCAR is a small club not a business, we’re in this to promote AR not to make a living out of it. (BTW I’m not knocking anyone who is making a business out of it, fair play to them if they can; it’s not an easy business to be in) We’ve been on the go since 2006 and have seen some changes over the last few years. As far as I can see the raise of all the large “multisport events” as I would prefer to call them can only help Adventure Racing in general. We don’t get any funding from anywhere and have only ever had the odd bit of sponsorship, the kayaks from Bic Sport for example. We don’t give out prizes at all the events, instead we hold them back for the series. All our events are planned and run by club members and volunteers.

What Your Entry Fee Includes for 1 day event.
Aside from the privilege of competing in a highly enjoyable event with your fellow like-minded racers, your entry fee includes:
    • At least one pre-marked and laminated map per team
    • One laminated route instruction sheet per team
    • Sportident timing
    • Paddles, PFD's and Kayak hire
    • Any other specialist equipment hire
    • Secret tasks within the race
    • Event Administration
    • Post race food (most of which is homemade)
    • Insurance*
*Causeway Coast Adventure Racing has public liability insurance to cover its events.
This however does not cover personal injury. If this is of concern we would recommend that you take out personal insurance to cover all eventualities in your outdoor endeavours.

It’s almost real, real AR is multiday racing for mixed 4 person teams. It is however as you rightly say tremendous fun and more importantly it’s a great stepping stone onto the longer races. These shorter events are aimed at the novice adventure racer (mind you they have attracted some of the more experienced racers over the years), giving them the chance to try out the multi-disciplines connected with the longer events.
