Any of the good folk on boards own or have any experience with this model?
I am thinking of changing my car as I am doing a lot more mileage with work and have reluctantly decided to look at a diesel!
Main problem I have is I am currently in a MkV DSG GTi and was in a boxster prior to that. So, I am used to plenty of power and am looking for a sporty-ish diesel with a bit of poke! I could probably get the standard 150bhp up to 170-180 with a remap?
Just wondering as I haven't driven one yet if anyone here has? I had a look at the interior of the RS model with all the extras and it looks nice inside but the dealer didn't have one I could test drive.
    Any help appreciated! Cheers

/edit something like this is what i'm looking at by the way!/

I know that DMF's had to be changed in the Leggy with the same engine. I don't know if that will apply to this car though.

27k asking price for a near 2 year old jap diesel - I'd be seeking out a new one for that kinda outlay.

Ah I just linked to that one so people would know the model etc. Not necessarily that one or that year or price. That price is way off. Cheers

Hi Homer. Looking at a diesel impreza myself. There are 3 trim levels. Basic TD, S and RS. Price difference is about 10k from top to bottom. The TD base was launched at 21k euro. Top model is about 32k. The only difference is the trim, alloys and lights. All models are same power and AWD. I'd by the base and get stuff added later. Check out Subaru website. The top 2 models are easy to find and are the only ones with prices. But the base TD model is on the equipment spec listing. Gonna check more in new year. If ur after economy stick with 2.0tdi DSG Golf. Probably the most frugal and fun diesel I've ever driven.

news to me also...30k km into my leggy diesel and no word of it

    I'd agree with this.

The RS is not worth the money

I had a good look around the Impreza when I was buying the leggy and thought the centre console was not as well built and I think coming from a Golf you will find it not as solid.

Engine is great though and should be nice in the lighter Impreza

If I was looking in this class of car, I'd be tempted to look at the Alfa Giulietta. The 2.0JTDm has 170bhp

I heard the achilles heel of these cars is the relatively (for a diesel) poor fuel economy.

True, but there's more to life than a Golf!

There have been some issues with the boxer diesel DMF but then most modern diesels have some DMF issues and it is considered a consumable by many manufacters, apparently. AWD cars give the DMF a harder time than most because the improved traction gives the clutch a harder time on hard starts. Two wheel drive cars will normally allow some wheel slippage before traction control kicks in and that 'give' is enough to ease the load on the clutch. AWD cars don't easily do that.

Many of the issues with the boxer DMF are on cars that were used for towing, especially on sand or soft surfaces or those that have been thrashed - higher mileage dealer demo cars etc.

In any event, Subaru have released a software update that alters the torque curve slightly so that standing starts are easier on the clutch. It should be applied at service time - there hasn't been a recall.

I doubt that you'll find a basic model Impreza diesel for sale new - they're not available in the UK and our here stock is the same as theirs.

As far as fuel economy is concerned, it should be similar to the old model Legacy. In the UK, diesel Legacy drivers seem to get 45 mpg average and that should be the same for the Impreza. Its not much lighter than the old model Legacy diesel and its performance figures and CO2 output are similar. It also has a closed loop DPF (old model Legacy is open loop) which would negate any slight weight advantage as the engine is fractionally less efficient. Its a matter of debate of 45 mpg overall is 'relatively poor' for a mid size AWD saloon producing 150 bhp and 258 lbs ft of torque. My trip computer shows an average consumption of 5.8 l/100 km - even allowing for optimism on its part I'm very happy with the fuel consumption, especially given that I tend to drive enthusiastically. I've 60,000 very happy kms up now.

OP - if you buy one, I'd live with the car for a while before doing a remap - see how you like it as it is.

You can't add stuff like heated wiper area on windscreen, heated seats etc easily/cheaply to a basic model even if you can track one down

I'm getting 6.0l/100km on my trip and at the moment even in the snow/icy conditions with lower gear driving its registering 6.4l/100km

For a AWD with 150bhp, I think thats very good. Wasn't even getting that from the GT (1.9 diesel).

My leggy is in for a service soon so I must ask about the software update. 245, any idea when was it released?

My bro has the RS version, though not the best looking car ever,it is the most fun I have ever had driving a car.It is soooo quick it's unreal and has never caused an ounce of bother.I also have to that the inside is lovely and the seats are very comfortable. If I had the cash I would get one myself!!!

I think that it was the first quarter of this year. My car was serviced by Castle Garage Bray around March/April and the service invoice shows a software upgrade (free, of course). They were very coy about it when I asked about it and said something about improved engine running. I wasn't aware of the DMF software upgrade at that point but my car will be going back there for its 60k service within the next month so I'll ask about it then and if it hasn't yet been applied then I'll talk to them about it.

    I call BS :)

Only petrol turbo Subarus would be able to do that kinda quarter mile times. There's no way a diesel with not much more than half the power would be that quick...

When the name Impreza or Imprenza is mentioned i don't know why but i think of that awful show Hardy bucks ... can't get past the gold alloys and there is the obligetory and inevitable remap.
    Don't do it OP

    ....ok i'll pis off now

    Changed my car this year,
Stronly thought about the RS Imprezza 150brake..

Went for an Octavia vRS CR170 instead.. I have no regrets.

Thanks for the info. Might look into the Legacy, never realy considered it before. BTW, the Almera handles like poo on bends, but great M-way cruiser with the 6 speed. Is heavy on the juice, geting 7.2l/100km. looking at getting it chipped by Chipped Ireland. they reckon that you can get a 10% fuel saving. Has anyone heard anything about them or direct experience? they have a chip for 300 yos, and seems pretty straight forward. + 30 bhp. Heard also that its posible to put the injectors from the 2.5 Navara/Pathfinder into the 2.2 block if I want to take it further.

38mpg, not great but not too bad either if that includes lots of small spins.
