Which one of these do you prefer to have in your sitting room?

I prefer the stove myself, it throws out more heat for a less fuel used. That said where I live now has an open fire and when you could end up staring into it for hours, it's caveman TV!

    Good for you.

Although I resent the implication that I'm little more than a receptacle for producing large volumes of hot air.

I have a stove in the kitchen & an open fire in the sitting room.. the best of both worlds!

I hate gas fires - they're as bad as fake Christmas trees - just not the real deal.

Man I love the open fire.. The flames! Could chill on the couch with a beer, no tv on and just look at a blazing fire.

Nothing like an open fire as I sit in my high backed chair with my smoking jacket on, swirling a glass of cognac, watching WrestleMania.

are things that bad these days that our only source of entertainment is looking at a fire?

Worse. I have to sit, gazing longingly at a radiator. I'd kill for an open fire.

Nothing beats an open fire watching the coal, briquettes, firelogs & wooden logs burn to hell and knocking down a few pints while watching the genocide of said species! ;)

I have an open fire. I don't light it every night though.
If i didn't have that, i'd go for a stove.

Open fire, followed by gas fire.
With a correctly installed fireplace and regulator, it'll give off way more heat than a stove, and it's nowhere near as utterly ugly.

A stove is way more efficient especially to heat hot water and radiators.

Same as that, open fire in sitting room and stove with a back boiler in the kitchen. Pain in my face lighting fires though, solid fuel is the only heating I have.

We've nothing in our sitting room. Well, a heater. But we've a range in the kitchen.

We run the gas off the electricity and the electricity off the gas and we save two hundred pounds a year, but then a few weeks later ah god, I'll never forget it now, we got a new boiler..."

Used to have an open fire but got a stove during the summer. It's class because it uses only half the turf.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,295 ✭✭✭✭Duggy747

Preferably I'd like to have all 3 blazing :pac:

I miss the open fires, last house I lived in had a great fireplace but this crappy house I'm in now has an electric fireplace that would drink electricity like there's no tomorrow.

Maybe I should just burn that instead....

Open fires are like pay as you go and gas/electric fires are like bill pay. I prefer not to have the shock of having a huge bill 2 months later when using a gas/electric fire:)

What are you burning in it?

The smoke is supposed to go up the chimney and if you allow the fire burn hot with say coal the glass will clear.

It has got to be an open fire especially during Winter at Christmas time :D I hate not having an open fire in my house :( Anytime I call into my parents they have a nice roaring fire going it kills me when I have to go back to mine after sitting all cosy infront of it.
