What do you have your oil burner thermostat at?

I'm in a 3 bed semi & we got a brand new oil boiler a couple months ago. It burns gas oil. I had the thermostat on the boiler set to about 65 for ages but doesn't seem to be heating the house as it's getting colder. So I've put it to 70 and haven't noticed much of a difference.

Just wanted to see what other people have theirs at.

Also we used about 200 euros worth of gas oil in 10 weeks, does this seem exorbitant? What are other people using up. We are not here much, just mornings and nights & then I'll have it on a couple hours on weekend afternoons before I switch to the fire.

Also, why is gas oil more expensive than kerosene? Is it supposed to be more efficient?

On Kerosene and I have it at 60 degrees F which is about 16 Celsius and it is more than adequate in my dormer bungalow. I also have a stand alone oil stove which is on 24/7 and it heats living/kitchen area. OFCH comes on at 5 till 8. I don't light a fire-only occasionally. Still it has been quite cold the last few days and I am just about to dip the tank even though I got 500 litres at the beginning of the month!!!!:(

Its really difficult to compare oil usage as most houses are different and insulation plays a big part in retaining heat. You say your in a semi detached house and the first thing i would say is that these type of houses generally retain heat better than detached. I am not clear on what Gas/oil is, never heard of it to be honest but the fact you have new boiler suggests to me you should be getting excellent performance from it or perhaps it needs tweaking. I am a bit surprised at a plumber advising a new boiler which uses an apparently more expensive fuel (Curious as to how much it costs?), maybe others can advise.

The fact your thermostat was set at 65 and now 70 would concern me. 65 should be more than sufficient for a newish and well insulated house and this suggests to me your Boiler may required attention. As for €200 for ten weeks, i would reckon this is about right.

Is maith an scáthán súil charad.

I'm surprised you're burning gas oil in a new boiler?

Did you have some gas oil left over or something and didn't change? Most new boilers are pre-set to Kerosene as I understand it.

I presume your boiler is outside? I think gas oil can only be used in an outside boiler.

I understand that gas oil is used in older systems. It is dirtier than Kerosene, and your boiler will require more frequent servicing.

Gas Oil is a lower grade oil than Kerosene. I think there may be higher tax on it.

What boiler did you get - I'll attach link to my post as I'm thinking about replacing an old boiler. I'm also in a semi-D. I have the boiler set at about 55, but I have big rads. The place used to be an icebox before I replaced the old rads. Maybe your rads need replacing. If they're the old type with no convectors they won't give the output of a modern one. No matter how hot my old rads were to touch, they gave off virtually no heat.

Is that with a combi boiler or a boiler and tank combination?
