Pretty much our connection is dire. When I first moved up to my college accommodation the internet I have here was, well as if I had suddenly moved from the middle of the amazon too New York.

At home,Well each weekend I die a litte, the connection is terrible.Every few months it may pick up,not crashing as much but then straight back too every 2 mins disconnection.

Now when ever I called in the past they tell me as its because we live so far from the town(4 miles). Now my neighbor, who is literally a house apart and thye dont have as much internet disconnection.

Once when I called them they clamed it could be the lead, being too long and maybe old((The walls in our house are too thick for wireless)).

So any ideas or general help would be great thanks.

Have you tried moving the modem to the "master" socket (the main eircom socket, usually inside the door), even if that involves moving the PC temporarily? Make sure to disconnect all other extensions, faxe machines, Sky boxes, etc. Do you have an alarm connected to the line?

It might be that at 4 miles you're phone line is nearing the limit of its capabilities and poor internal wiring / equipment in your house is pushing it over the edge. It might also be just a a crap phoneline, but at least you can narrow it down.

Is voice quality on the line perfect, slightly crackly, or poor? Does it improve if you disconnect everything, as above, except just one eircom phone?

I would have said the four mile thing, but I was discussing it with my neighbor and she's literally 100m away from me and has no such problem.

I'm hoping, and half kicking myself if it is,that its the fact the cable which connects the modom to the line is of poor quality. This weekend I was litrerally on it for two minutes at home, with it connection showing for 10 seconds then crashing for another 10 minutes.

It seems to worse during peak times so be it the cable not be able too handle it or what ever heh.I'm gonna try and get a cable when I'm back home later this week.So hopfully.
