Ring on Bull

I have a bull who is about 4 to 5 years old. He is quiet so far.

The ring fell out of his nose about 2 months ago. Should I get another ring in or is it best to leave it as it might cause him stress putting another ring in resulting in him becoming agressive

If you're going to do it, do it soon before the hole contracts and seals over.

I would re ring him if you intend holding on to him for some time

a stainless steel ring is best suited for aged bulls

I think Whelan is correct, by law it's a must, if it's not now it was some years ago as I remember.

I'm not so sure that having your bull ringed is a legal requirement.
It is certainly a requirement by (probably all) the breed societies when selling a bull at society sales, I don't about farm to farm sales.
It features in the agriculture code of practice, but thats as it is: a code of practice and not a statutory instrument.
Maybe there is a SI out there somewhere but I never came across it!
Having said all that: I would never offer for sale a bull or run a bull without a ring and I would agree with the previous poster advising a stainless steel ring.

Nothing in the Irish statute book. I searched for "bull"

Although there is a fair bit of bull in there, there's nothing specific about ringing the bulls snozzle.

But forget about the law, do it now for your own good and peace of mind.

look it, if you had to have a ring in a bull's nose every male calf born would have to have one until castrated

None of the bull beef finishers ring their lads, or maybe their less vicious :D:D

Why is a stainless steel one better, stronger??

Mostly AI used here and thinking of keeping a decent bull. What age/ weight should a ring go on a bulls nose- own bred commercial suckler. Does a vet have to do it or is it easy to do in a crush. Tks

put ring on him when he is about 12 months old. you can do it yourself once you get a punch to bore a hole in the nose & use a halter to hold head tight... but if its your first time ringing a bull and if the vet is in the yard you could get him to do it for you.

Remember talking to a well regarded Pedigree breeder about ringing a bull.
He would be breeding several bulls of Different breeds each year.Said he always got a stranger to ring his bulls as they would be fed concentrates after ringing and as he said they never forget the stress around ringing time!

    +1 on that.

My self and my father bought a young bull years ago and the man that we bought him from told me to go away in case the bull remembered me and himself and my father ringed him.

The bull always had a set against my father whereas I could always handle him easily. He turned on the father one day while I was away and my fathers dog hunted the bull away.

Don't ever ring a bull if you're keeping him yourself.

That's a load of scutter we have rung near 100 bulls all at about 12 months old and kept them up to 18 - 30 months before selling them and not one bull took a dislike to any of us. People tend to get atacked by bulls when they make the bull feel on edge with there body language eg someone always waving a stick around and shouting.

I know anyone can get atacked at any time but I agree with your statment. You need to respect a bull for him to respect you. If a cow is bulling here I don't walk trough the cows that day I just leave him at it. Generally if he's not standing I leave him be. If he cums near me I don't freek and hush him away. He's the first animal I look for when going into a field.

But I'd never trust the tunt.

That's exactly it you need to respect the bull. Its just the same with a dog if you keep poking him with a stick you're going to get bit.
