    Didn't know they were sacred.

Dont see the need to start a new thread, I also have a passport related question: Im 19, my mother got me a ten year passport when I was 12, hence my passport pic is of me as a 12 year old, and look quite different.
Where do I stand legally with using this?
(lost my other id, so I may have to us this when getting drink, embarrassing)

    Use it as normal.

You are free to spend €80 and get a new one if you want.

AFAIK this is right. Sure it's only 3 more years of embarrassment :P

I honestly cannot afford that. I blame the price of law books.

So even though I look greatly different now than in the pic I should have few issues using it you reckon?

Jesus. I wonder if anyone has ever been prosecuted under this. I presume it is to discourage forgeries/tampering? It's also interesting that it specifies that it counts even outside the state. Isn't it very unusual for laws to extend beyond that nation's borders?

This act was passed after some Columbian birdwatchers came home.

    It's even an arrestable offence.

Not really, a lot of states make laws that allow the home state to prosecute their nationals for crimes committed abroad.

    Get an age card
I have one, but have misplaced it.

Get another, surely cheaper than 80 euro for a passport.

I am, it takes a while though, and I have to use the passport in the meantime.

Ironically, a passport is not considered legal proof of age when it comes to purchasing alcohol; only a Garda issued ID card.

That is just one shops (Tesco) view. A passport is perfectly acceptable as proof of age.

    You might read these:

    http://www.irishstatutebook.ie/1988/en/act/pub/0016/sec0034.html#zza16y1988s34
    http://www.irishstatutebook.ie/2000/en/act/pub/0008/sec0015.html#partii-sec15
    http://www.irishstatutebook.ie/2003/en/act/pub/0031/sec0015.html#partiii-sec15
    http://www.irishstatutebook.ie/2003/en/act/pub/0031/sec0025.html#partiv-sec25

It may be construed as discriminatory to contrive to prohibit a purchase, merely because a passport is used.

I apologise if I was mistaken, but have a look at any pub in Westport and they take the view that they will only accept Garda issued ID, and not a passport.

I asked the owner of one of the pubs what that was about, to which he responded that many pub owners are taking this precaution as a result of a local judges decision.

I faced the same problem myself when I lived in Texas - the local poolhall would not accept my passport, only a valid Texan ID.

The proof of ID for a Garda ID is a Passport and birthcert:confused:

That's always confused me. Why when a piece of ID expires is it not valid any more for accessing pubs? We had trouble a few years ago in the USA when a one of our US licences had expired. The bouncer wouldn't let the person into the pub, but did let him in with the big piece of pink paper.

Because ID gets passed on and used fraudulently.

That reminds me of the gag about producing photo Id that is a little out of date to a well known airline.

Airline - have you any photo ID

Pass - yes, here you are

Airline - I'm sorry, but this is out of date

Pass - (pointing at photo), but its still me.

    :D:D

It can be used fraudulently when it's in date.

Is it illegal to mutilate an expired but uncancelled passport?

To be safe, I suggest that you keep it in an airtight container until it lasts until the end of time.
