Looking for advice on buying a new car

    Hi guys,
I bought a 2010 fiat 500 - have it 10 months. Good car. 10K on clock. More recently, the new Audio A1 1.2 caught my eye. I am wondering what my options/cost could be in doing a trade in? Have never done this before. Thanks.

Be prepared to lose about 25-30% of the purchase price on your current car towards the trade in for the A1. Best option would be to sell the car for cash and bargain the dealer down for price as you will have nothing to trade in.

I'd say trade it in.... not many folks will want a 9-10K private purchase.

With a garage warrenty? I'm guessing the Fiat 500 still has one.

Regardless, sell fiat 500, grab some beater for 100eur and do the scrappage deal for a discount on the A1. Easy!

Dont you have to have owned the car you are scraping for a certain length of time; 6 months or something?

You should consider what you are about to do very carefully.

1st If you bring that car into a dealer you're going to be raped (no lube or nothin)

2nd Although a Fiat 500 is very sellable car, you don't stand a chance of selling it privately unless you're willing to SLASH the price. Look at the cheapest one on Carzone and add a little extra if your car is particularly nice (don't mind what some idiot is ASKING for his car. Look at the cheaper ones to see what they might be SELLING for)

If you can afford to lose your bollox, go for it. If this is just an itch you think you need to scratch, forget about it. For the money you're about to lose you could get yourself a really nice holiday, a home cinema system, pc or whatever floats your boat.

ps To benefit from the scrappage scheme the car has to be registered in your name for the past 18 months and has to have been insured (with you as the main policy holder) for the past 12

Go back to your FIAT dealer and ask them for a price against a new A1. Not many people know that you can buy a brand new, different marque, car from any dealer.

You would be likely to get a better trade-in offer for your FIAT, which is a pretty desirable motor.

Edit: Also, BMW, for example, and possibly Audi, will not allow other marques be sold from their dealers, hence they will only offer trade price on a trade in.

I'd say take a step back. The Audi is little more than a glorified Polo and wont do anything your 500 cant. Seems like a waste of money to me.

And , using that logic, the 500 is a little more than a glorified Ford Ka!

If someone wants a particular style/model, let them be. You will not find many going for a Polo in preference to the A1.

The OP states he/she has never done this before, so I think they should listen to all the advice, yours included, from those that have been there and done that.

    To inject a number:

Let's say you choose a base 1.2 with leather MFSW, metallic paint, power mirrors and a Connect system for the Audio, that's €20,800, less say €8000 for your 500, €12800 to change.

Have you checked out the Alfa Mito? You should get a better trade in for your Fiat against an Alfa.

Was just going to suggest the Mito too or a Citroen DS3.

Have you seen that DS3 sitting on the stand for the last few months? Looks a sweet bus!

The only way to find out what it's going to cost to change is to go into the dealer, they might see your car as a good, easy seller, and a chance to pump up their numbers on the A1. Let us know how much though, I'd be curious to see.

My last company motor was a Vectra but as we dealt with a Ford garage for lease cars, they ordered it from an Opel garage. As the lease plan stated I had to go to the Ford garage for serving they unfortunately were not the best at sorting any minor issues and on occasion they would have to forward me onto the respective Opel garage which was a hassle. It might be totally different for a private sale, but something to consider.
