Painting a car

Too skint to get it resprayed. I plan to keep it as although it's a 2000, it has low mileage and is in very good mechanical order. Not in love with the colour, though, so I want to change it. Never painted anything except a wall, so what's the best way? I was going to wash it, let it dry, and apply tape to everything that isn't going to get painted. Then base coat and then paint. Is gloss the paint I should be using? Should I be sandpapering at any point - is that necessary? Which colours are good to avoid fade?

    TIA.

If you're serious, I think you might get better results with these...

Old paint burns nicely off, a bit sanding and new paint on :)

Here's the lowdown - if you do it yourself it will look like crap.
You could ask a professional for a quote.
