4 Year Plan Broadcasting

Suppose a broadcasting thread is required :(

    So what did they say?

TG4 is to have its exchequer funding reduced by 6.4 million in 2011. Which will reduce the channel back to 2006 levels of around 28million direct exchequer. But RTÉ have to pick up the savings by giving 6.4million to TG4 thus TG4 isn't loosing out.

I as you know am a big fan of TG4. I find that what they had done on little money from 1996 - 2006 was amazing for such low budgets, however I did feel that further increase were unnecessary for the channel while I still think they did great work with that money over the last 4 years, I personally thought it was too much. The short fall could have been made up by increase the amount of advertising on the channel, and some joined up thinking on the Film Channel and the Oireachtas Channel.

Reduce the high salaries of their top earners?

To get €6.4 million, you would need to put them all on the new minimum wage and even then I doubt that that would do it.

We will be seeing more of what we have got used to - repeats.

Yes, that would maybe raise 1M. There should be a cap.

Top earners in this Country inc Politicians are too generous to themselves.

I was thinking about their top earners and reducing their wages, but I didn't come up the 1m.

If you reduce their top 8 from 2008 back to 100,000 each RTÉ would save €3.2m. (This figure includes Eamon Dunphy and the Late Gerry Ryan, so the savings would be less and less again based on 2009/2010 figures).

I think it gives them an opportunity to pump some money into Animation which would satisfy the needs of Cula4 and RTÉjr, while also becoming self funding through international sales.

I was pretty annoyed too when I found about TG4's funding getting a cut. They do some stellar work I think on their documentaries alone. They broadcast Oireachtas live sometimes and of course occasionally get in some foreign Tv shows like True Blood and have decent films on every now and then.

I of course agree with the point about caps on salaries in RTE but it seems that everyone agrees about caps on public wages except those on them! I assume RTE are exempt from the €250,000 a year cap introduced in the budget?

Bloody crazy to think the likes of Pat Kenny get so much considering TV3 wouldn't pay that and I really doubt any of the British stations would hire the guy.
