Retirement age

I have a question regarding retirement age.

In my work place people normally retire at 65, and take a transition old age pension from the state. When they reach 66 they are then entitled to transfer to the standard contributory OAP. At least that is my understanding.

A guy I know, is now coming up to 65 next month, and has been told by his employer, that his employment with the company will cease on his sixty fifth birthday. There is no mention of any definitive retirement age in his terms of employment.
He wants to stay on in work as long as possible. Can his employer terminate his employment without his agreement in this case, as a specific retirement age is not stipulated in his contract of employment?

This page would indicate that they can't.

Though it does say the following:
In some cases, there is a statutory retirement age. These retirement ages arise in jobs that are established by law and the law sets out the maximum age of staff.
