Just a quick question to see if anyone here knows off hand if the MA in counselling psychology in Trinity is still running? Has it become a PHD or are they running both??

I cant find my way around their website at all!! :p On the PSI site it says that it is accredited until September 2010.

Also it appears that if the MA is gone then there is only 1 other Masters level of study in Psychology in the whole country. That seem ridiculous to me, especially when a requirement for the PHD is to have a masters??????

I am considering leaving this island at some point in the future and want to be sure that my qualifications are recognized abroad,is the PSI the only way to go about this??

    Thanks for any advice!!:)

It has become a PhD. I do not think that a Masters is necessary to do a PhD. It's a professional doctorate IIRC rather than a research PhD.

Had a very long reply written but the boards gremlins seem to have lost it!

    Basicialy summed up:

Counselling Psych now doctorate, brought into line with counselling psych in UK and US.

If you are looking to work as psychologist in most countries now you will need doc. level training. (some exceptions but fewer each year) Experienced psych's can apply to get around this but still difficult.

Also far more than 1 taught masters in psych, a quick google got me five from tcd, ucd, nuig and dcu. Also think of masters by research.

last part was a bit of a rant about how the training is long because it takes that long (for the right reasons). Most students after their degree lack the maturity, insight and experience to begin professional training. If you are going to build these to sufficient levels (some never will!!!) it will happen when you get supervised work experience in a clinincal setting, conduct reseach, combination of both.

finished on a positive stating if you stick at it its worth it.

also if you have specifiic questions on Counselling Psychology or the TCD course i should be able to answer.

Thanks for the replies. Just looking at the options,im a few years into this road, and would completely agree about the lack of maturity or practical understanding graduates have after degree. Its good that work experience is expected. I've worked in several social care fields in the last 5 years, the experience has been fantastic.I'm doing a HDip in Psychotherapy Studies at the moment, its great having real world examples of the theories.

I was hoping to do the psychoanalytic masters but not sure how well it will travel!!! As it seems that Psychoanalysis in Canada is not the same as is studied here. I love the subject but don't want to put time and money into a masters that effectively I may not be able to use.

I looked at the PSI website itself and they have only listed a Masters in Educational Psychology in UCD,all their other listed accredited postgrad courses are PHDs. I wonder who are these other masters accredited by? (off to research that:p)

I would be interested in the counselling PHD,dont know much about it. It seems from the page that psychodynamic stuff is looked at,is it in much detail?

    Thanks again for replies!!:)

You could be correct on that, but then again, what is the main psychoanalytic school you want to with with, Freud, Lacan, etc.

Let me know and it take a few days but I can make a few calls, no problem

I'm not 100% sure but I think its Lacan, it'll be the Masters in UCD with Vincents. Just not sure if there are any lacnians over in Vancouver :p It's def my first choice of masters,Im doing the HDip to see the other types of psychotherapy but I'm still drawn to psychoanalysis.

Thanks that would be great if you knew someone who would have an idea. As I say it would be a shame to study it and then not be able to use it. I'm pretty set on Vancouver!! :D

Is it the MSc in the School of Psychotherapy in St Vincents? Excellent course.

If this is the case I will be able to call people who would know. I have met Lacanians from all over the world, we are becoming one of the biggest groups of psychoanalysts.

There are Lacanian clinics over there, I'm not sure about Vancouver. I made a few calls and they will bet back to me with contacts, I hope. It may be a few days but as soon as I get anything, I'll get on to you.

I am currently searching for a good place in the USA to study a Phd in counselling psychology but I find it incredibly difficult to find where even runs this course? Any help would be amazing.

    Hi Sheena,

Would imagine your difficulty was with the extra 'L'; they spell it as counseling psychology in the US.

Anyway here is a list of the courses which the American psychology association Accredits:

    http://www.apa.org/ed/accreditation/programs/accred-counseling.aspx

have to be careful when picking a us course that it's on this list!! Otherwise you will waste time and lots of money.
