Hey , My brothers & I were looking into getting dentures for my mam, We don't really know alot about the procedure or costs , If any body can tell me about there experience and costs and where they had it done we were considering going out of dubin to get it done cheaper . I know it will be a full set of dentures she needs but I dunno if the remaining teeth are to be removed or not ??

The realy point is there are good and bad dentures. Good ones are comfortable and look like teeth. Bad ones are uncomfortable and look like dentures. The problems is that good ones take time and money and bad ones are ten a penny.

Sometimes implants can be used to stablise the dentures and improve the quality of life and oral comfort.

Dentists that specialist in making quality aesthetic comfortable dentures are prosthodontists. These dentures will cost a lot more than getting them from a unlicenced denturist, however they are generally superior. I would advise going to a dentist to find out what she need first.

Can't guarantee that you will get a nice set of dentures off a dentist no more than a denturist. Dentists don't actually make Dentures. They take impressions and send them to a lab to be made and then go through a process of sending them back and forth trying them in etc.....The main problem here is that because dentures are going back and fourth between the lab and the dentist and the lab never see them in the persons mouth the margin for error can be much higher as they are relying on passing information to each other.

The best place to find where to get a good set of dentures is word of mouth. If you know anyone that has a nice set and is satisfied with them ask where they got them. Some labs and dentists work closely together and you can get better results. Has your mother got them already? Is she satisfied with her current set? Why not go to the same person again?

In my line of work i have seen some nice natural looking dentures and some absolutely disgraceful ones. One of the main things i would advise is not to let a Dentist/Denturist/Prostodontist etc.... decide what looks nice in her mouth. Let her decide for herself. A lot of people are unsatisfied with the way dentures look but afraid to say anything and end up with something they don't want and this in turn drives down the standards. If people don't say what they do or don't want the dentures to look like the Dentist/Denturist/Prostodonist won't know what the person wants and will most likely make a set of unsatisfactory dentures.

I have never seen a denturist with sterilization equipment for starters. This thing of dentists sending dentures to a lab is true but it takes both a good dentist to take proper impressions (not the single algenate most technicians and some dentists take) prepare the mouth, define the bite, tooth form, tooth mould, assess the denture bearing areas and alter impression techniques to match. The a good technician to set the teeth, handle the stone work with respect, not overwork the wax, choose good teeth not chepo teeth. Its a team approach, and this does not come cheap.

Let me show you a set of dentures, these took 9 visits, 1 assessment, 2 surgical visits, 2 impression visits, Jaw records,3 try ins, delivery and 2 ease appointments, and a laboratory which takes pride in good work (no they are not in ireland). This quality and stability and aesthetic is not for everyone. This lady for instance was very exacting and we even had to alter the lip support of these after processing. The lab bill alone was 1500 sterling. You are not going to get these results on the medical card where the dentist is paid about 300 euro for top and bottom complete dentures of from a denturist alone.

I agree. This is one of the main problems i have come across. There are some excellent Dentists that work well with there labs and there are some that just want people in and out as fast as possible. The same works the other way, there are some labs that take no pride in there work and throw out whatever they can make up. I find when people just accept what they get from Dentists/Labs etc.... it is driving down the standards.

Trainee at the moment but its been in the family for over 40 years. Drives the old fella mad when he see's poor standards of dentures. As i say there are some excellent Dentists/Labs etc... which deserve to be supported but there is poor work out there also which i'm sure you've come across yourself.

I do not think many prosthodontists would aggree with that. All prosthodontists can construct dentures (all stages) and many do. Patients should really attend a prosthodontist for complete dentures if they want optimal treatment.

Dentures are demanding for both patient and dentist. This work looks excellent
