NCT Fail Item Shock Imbalance

    OK boys and girls, here's one for you. My father had his car in for the test today and it failed for shock imbalance.

    Front shock results 35mm and 35mm

    Back shock results 97mm and 100mm

    From my reading, the result from the front two and back two are not interrelated or can someone show me where they are. The right hand column says an imbalance of over 30%. I will accept that the movement is considerable in the rear, but I'd just like to know what rule it's breaking. For all I know it's designed that way. The car is a Fiat Idea (line up the wise cracks!)

    Are the rear shocks completely shot??

    Maybe thats why you failed though I always thought you could pass with 2 failed shocks so long as they were equally failed. Stupid, I know!

    Maybe they are. As I say the movement is quite big. But not fluid leakage and both almost exactly the same value???

    Like you, I thought that the imbalance refered to shocks on the same axle.

    As for wisecracks, FIAT never had a good Idea!!! :) (It's just a pun; I've never been in one, so I don't know what they're like, before anyone takes offence!)

    I dont thing they measure movement (mm) in relation to shocks. I think its a reading in nm or something like that whicj would relate to forces involved in the shock movements.
    Front to rear readings are not important, its the axle set that should match but even so, yours look very close and certainly not over 30% imbalance unless there was another reading you are not showing us.

    Don't think there's anything else although I haven't seen the report yet. I've sent a message to the nct crowd so we'll see.

    Might not necessarly be just the shock but also the trailing arm bushes could be worn, causing this effect. Its happened to me several times before...

    I quite like Fiats and have a big collection of them. But the Idea was anything but a good one, I could never figure out what part of the market it fitted into :confused:

    Can you show us a scan of NCT report, because it looks quite impossible with that values to fail on imbalance.

    PS. It's not mm(milimetres) but Nm (Newton * metre).

    Don't have the report in front of me, just quoting my father. He hadn't told me that they've written on the bottom that the shocks are worn. So I suppose that that! Amazing that they are both reading the same, and I don't think they are leaking either. Still want to talk to someone in NCT though.
