Dental Implant Really Necessary?

Hi, a few weeks ago i fell and cracked one of my molars in half. I got it extracted and it has healed perfectly. The dentist recommended a dental implant which is going to cost in the region of 2k - 2.7k. What I want to know is, is the dental implant really necessary? The loss of the tooth doesnt bother me at all as it is the 3rd from the back and you cant see a gap when i smile. I've heard teeth can space out after time if there is no tooth there, is this true? I couldn be bothered shelling out that much money for nothing.....

    Thanks in advance! :)

    P.S. its a bottom molar.

Its a good idea to replace missing teeth even back ones for several reasons.

    1. Prevent the teeth either side tipping in.
    2. Prevent the opposing upper teeth growing down.
    3. The bone will disolve over time, an implant may not be possible in the future.
    4. Prevent food getting stuck in the gap and the side of the adjacent teeth.
    5. Increase chewing function.
    6. Prevent the load being spread over a smaller number of teeth.

Nobody ever died of a missing back first molar, however if you have the time money and inclination and implant is an excellent replacement and a good long term investment.
