Hi a group of us are going skiing in Austria starting on Newyears day. We are flying into Memmingen on New years eve and we were thinking of heading to munich for that night. What would you think of it for new years eve, would there be some where better in the region. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

munich is mental for the new year.
theres no official fireworks display as such.

Most of the cities citizens stock up on rockets and bangers and for midnight people gather on the streets to celebrate the new year together.
The underground runs all night long so this also encourages a lot to go downtown.

heres a video of whats to be expected near the main square marienplatz

(maybe theres better videos, i just took the first one on the search!!)

one of the best places is at the friedensengel (angel of peace) which overlooks the city, (not much view of the city in this video though)

either way. All you'll need is to pick up some bottles of beer beforehand and you'll have a good time out and about.

One other quick question that some1 might be able to answer. Is there an area in munich with a number of bars and clubs. so that we aren't spending too much time wandering around from bar to bar to find a bit of craic.

There are many bars in Schwabing.
The main U-Bahn station (subway, tube) and bus terminus is at Münchner Freiheit.
Other U-Bahn stations are Giselastrasse and Universität.
The underground lines are U3 and U6.

Hi I know this is a really old post but we are flying to memmingen on dec 31st and want to get to Munich that evening. The direct airport bus doesn't seem to go that day. Is there any other way to get to Munich from memmingen on New Year's Eve? Any help appreciated!!

    Thanks

Head to the Ostbahnhof and you will find Kunstpark.

Its a mad spot in a old industrial area with a collection of many clubs, pubs and music bars.

if the shuttle doesnt run (i'd check again nearer the time) then you can get a bus or taxi to Memmingen station and theres a train every hour to Munich sometimes though requiring a change along the way.

the cheapest way to Munich is to get a bayern ticket (Bavaria day ticket) and take a regional train to Munich (not a fancy pants intercity that is actually not much quicker anyhow)
if theres more than one of you then you can add on more people when buying the ticket.
These are the prices for the ticket and number of people which it covers at that price, meaning that for 5travelling together you only pay €7.60 for unlimited travel in Bavaria, including all the city underground and busses etc.

    1 Reisender: 22,- Euro
    2 Reisende: 26,- Euro
    3 Reisende: 30,- Euro
    4 Reisende: 34,- Euro
    5 Reisende: 38,- Euro

if you are into clubs you'll have to book in advance, especially for NYE.
would recommend pacha in munich - great club.

    http://muenchen.pascha.de/DE/MUENCHEN

a night club with ladies of the night, and not a disco!!

ANYHOW, the latest poster was asking how to GET to munich, and not what to do there if ye took the couple of seconds to read his question.

confusing with other recent answers referring to nights out - should create a new thread, not drag up a dead one...
