It a very fair golf course that rewards good shots, unlike some other links courses. Most of the trouble is just short of the greens.

It's a couple of years since I played it but memory is of having to have the short game bang on. Played it in the middle of the summer on a horrible wet day.
Most of the trouble is around the greens, pretty fair of the tee like all links bunkers to be avoided especially off the tee as your looking at a pitch out on most.
Par 3 15th is a true gem which I managed to birdie

I don't think you want any tips, you're just gloating! :)

There may possibly be a little of that involved alright :)

pot bunkers are vicious, its a chip out sideways if you hit one off (or on) the fairway.

If you can get a caddy (if there are four of you, it would only probably be €20 each). Dont get him to carry your clubs or anything, but get him to give you lines on putts, exact distances to greens and lines off tees.

It will add to your enjoyment of the day no end at only a little cost.

We recently got a caddy up in portrush and it was brilliant to have a guy say this to you.

'174 to the front, about 200 to the pin- now there's a slope half way up the green that you have to either pitch into or hit a high shot onto. Green runs away from you once up the slope. All the trouble is right over that mound and the safe play is short left or long. Wind coming off the right, hit a 4 iron. 100%. Commit.'

I felt like a pga pro, it enhanced the enjoyment of the round and was the best €20 I have ever spent.

Enjoy it and let us know how you get on.

Would be interested to hear if they make you play off mats and if the fairways are closed etc. during the winter months.
Hopefully the weather will be kind to you too.

    Hey,

I'm a member and the front nine is closed pretty much. Holes like 6, par 5, are playing short - its pushed up to top of fairway, playing as a short par 4. 1 is closed, 2 is open, and I cant remember about three and four as I stick to the back nine and yellow nine now, which are in fantatstic
shape! Greens are perfect.....! Yellow nine is enjoyable if you're playing that.

Let us know how you find it! I plan to play Sunday but forecast might render that impossible so i might see you on Monday!

    No mats, fairways are good.

    Enjoy

Huh, well that's a little disappointing. It's a Society outing so will be off forward tees as it. Some of the older members of the society mentioned they were made play to the side of the fairways a few years back but hopefully none of that on Monday!

I'd imagine ye will play the yellow nine and the back nine then if its a society. Wont have any trouble playing off the fairways.

Interesting - do you mind me asking what sort of deal you guys are getting for your Society ?

I didn't even know that Portmarnock did societies. Our outings range from the K-Club, Druids, Palmerstown, European, Royal Dublin, Portmarnock Links - but we have never been to the real Portmarnock.

I'll certainly be suggesting it to our Captain for next year if it's not a mile more expensive that the others.

Some photos of Portmarnock if they're of any help.

Apologies, I honestly have no idea - I missed it last year but I gather the society plays it every year?

I'm due out at 8.30 Monday morning - not looking good if today's weather is anything go by :(
