    HI Guys,
I have never tried to service a car before and to be quite honest I dont know a whole lot about my car, Ford Mondeo 2005. However, I would love to learn and would love to service my car myself.

Was looking at this video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L--kaIb5GoI and although I have the petrol version (shouldnt matter) this video makes doing the service very easy...

Question is, giving I dont know my way around the car can I still carry out a service just as easy as this guy makes it look?

Any monkey can change the oil and filters in a car however it takes someone with knowledge to do a 'true service'.
Do you know how to check wheel bearings, ball joints, track rod ends, inner tie rods, brake pipes, brake pads, disks, rubber bushes, water pipes, water leaks and more stuff. Well thats what they do in a garage when servicing a car.

Now you might not be able to do that bit im sure you'll manage to change your oil and filter and spark plugs etc i'll run through with you.

Your going to need a few basic tools first of all:
    Set or ratchets and spanners.
Screwdrivers and torx bits(for pollen filter and air filter)
Oil filter wrench and a torch.
A jack and 2 axel stands, and an oil drain tray.

Just jack up the car at the front and put the axle stands under it to hold it. 13mm sump bung located at the bottom of the engine you can't miss it, it will be on its own, remove this and the oil will come pouring out so make sure it goes into the oil drain tray.

The oil filter is at the bottom front of the engine, its usually a solid white filter but earlier ones had a plastic housing for a paper filter that needs special removal tool(can be purchased from motor factors). What year is the car? I take its a 1.8?

First of all don't get Halfords stuff like your man said as they are crap and he hasn't a brain in his head, Ford parts are cheap so you might as well get genuine ones if you have an extra fiver to spend:rolleyes:

Let me know how you get on and and ill run through the rest of it with you.

Cheers for that Plug will give it a go, and yes it looks like anyone can change oil and filters but the other stuff I wouldn't have a clue around...

Then again, If I went to a garage for a service for oil and filters i'd be pretty sure that they wouldn't even look twice at the other stuff... I just dont trust mechanics for some reason I always feel they do just the bare minimum...
Thats why I want to do the basic myself...

Im a mechanic myself and I go through everything and Im not the only one on boards:p

Do the filter change yourself and if you go into a garage and ask them to do a full check over and get a list etc. what part of ireland are you in?

In Cork myself...Just talking to a buddy who knows a good reliable mechanic...Might pop it up to them for the first service altogether as I only bought the car not so long ago and dont really know what the service history was like...Maybe they will get a good idea of the condition then...?
