Villains of Irish History

In the annals of Irish history will Brian Cowen take his place among villains such as Oliver Cromwell and Dermot McMurrough? Or will he be remembered as the incompetent fool that was given control of the sinking ship while Patrick Ahern escaped in a lifeboat full of loot. There is no doubt in my mind that both men actively contributed to the sell out of the nation, however, I can’t help but feel Ahern is getting off very lightly indeed. Haughey’s assertion that Ahern was the most cunning of all the politicians, in my opinion, is very accurate. Cowen is a greedy inept idiot, but considering he’s in the firing line at the moment, he's obviously not an evil genius. Ahern on the other hand is enjoying his loot and celeb status, drinking in bars around Drumcondra.

I seem to remember it was only a few months ago, when Ahern featured on Tubridys show much to the delight of the audience who couldn’t get enough of his anecdotes and jokes. He really sh1t all over the Irish people and you had idiots asking for more. The man got away with high treason.

Maybe. But the Irish people of 1997 - 2008 will be remembered as the greediest, most self-entitled, irresponsible, feckless, spoilt generaton to have ever lived on this island.

Well, judging by the fact that everybody lays blame on "the government" and "the banks" for where we are today, rather than on their (as in the irish population, in general) own irrespnsible and frankly ludicrous financial decisions (eg. 40 year mortgages on 500 grand appartments by people in jobs that were unlikely to provide them with an income for 40 years) and by the fact that market pressure forced house prices up so high...yes.

Ever drive through a council estate during the boom? Bmw's, sky television, wooden floors and huge tv's in houses. We were (maybe still are)the most spoilt rotten nation on earth.

Thats not the reason the economy is fecked though. Irish property buyers couldn't rack up a quarter of the deficit if they tried. Idiot bankers recklessly speculating on foreign property booms such as the US, are more to blame. Irish mortgage holders are a mere blip on the radar and are of no real concern to the IMF/EU or indeed America. The Government are pushing the idea that its all down to Irish greed and people taken out mortgages because they hope people will be guilted into accepting a bailout meekly. A bailout that merely covers the gambling debts of the banks at the expense of Irish people.

Bertie Ahearn is getting off very lightly here. most of the damage was done in 2005-2008 when he was in charge.

Cowan doesnt escape as he was finance minister, but alot of grief on some of the current lot like lenihan is not totally correct. yes they have made f*ck ups galore in the last 2 years, but they were only putting out fires created by bertie, cowan and others in the middle of the decade.

If that's the case, it means he can't read either, or he would have put it on the right building.:(
