In the rush to get rid of them and demand they leave office asap, no-one seems to be pondering what tricks FF have up their sleeve and what their game plan will be for the next few months.

Well, If there is we one thing we can be sure about FF, its that the party always comes first. I would put good money on it that they spent 99% of yesterdays meeting before the announcement discussing how best to ensure the survival of FF.

FF would be completely decimated if there was an election in January, that is the sole reason why, imo, Cowen didn't dissolve the Dail yesterday. We have the ridiculous situation at the moment that they want to handle the dealings with the IMF and bring in the budget, yet another party will then take over. I have never heard such ****e in my life. It's plain obvious that the best course of action for the country would be for the party(s) that is going to be running the country for the next 5 years would be the one to deal with the IMF and bring in a budget. In a normal country that is what would happen.

I think the main issue that FF are dealing with at the moment is not doing whats best for the country, it's doing what's best for the party and avoiding a wipeout in the GE. They really are at the bottom of the curve now, I don't see how they could go any lower after the debacle of the last week. So they have decided to hang on to give themselves a few months to improve their chances at the GE as they can only go up from this point. Here's some of what I can see happening -

    • The budget being passed will be promoted as a huge victory for the government. That they are 'back in the game'.
    • They will have their PR wing, also known as RTE, upping the pro FF propaganda
    • This might sound callous, but I would not be a bit surprised if they have factored it in - Brian Lenehan might die on the job. This could really hurt the opposition. He will then get martyr status and we will be inundated with even more FF propaganda. They'll try and extract every bit of sympathy they can out of it.
    • They'll boot out Cowen and bring in a new leader a month or two before the election and say it's a fresh start with a new leader.

Im sure they will be spending a serious amount of time looking at ways to save the FF party (when they should be thinking about saving the country).

And when it comes to them leaving office, I will believe when I see it. The Greens called for an election in January, a few hours later Cowen comes out an makes his announcment and now we are looking at March before the election. I would not be surprised if by Feb, March, they will have come up with another excuse why an election should be put off - They have had plenty of practice with that after the outstanding by-elections.

I really hope Brian Lenehan does not die within the next few months as then they we are looking at their vote going back up to 22-25% when all the recently departed FFers will flock back to them out of sympathy.
