I'm sure this has been done so apologies but I couldn't find a recent thread on it.

I'm looking to find some Super Unleaded around South Dublin. Have looked in a few places near me but none seem to have it. does anyone know what stations or suppliers carry it?

    Cheers

    V.

I don't think anyone in the south sells super, you'd have to go north or use octane booster. The nearest thing down here is Maxol E5 which has a higher octane rating than Unleaded 95 because an unintended consequence of adding bioethanol to unleaded petrol is that it boosts the octane rating. However because ethanol has a lower energy (joules/litre) rating, what you gain on the octane you lose on raw power and it pretty much balances out.

What car are you driving? I am interested because I have a Golf GT 170 PS which likes 98 but I can't buy it here and the Maxol E5 didn't give me any extra performance.

Thats not quite true. It has (very marginally) lower calorific value, which means that if your car doesnt not advance timing far enough to take advantage of the higher octane you get lower MPG. But you do not get less "raw power". If you remapped your Golf to run on 100octane (and therefore could run high boost) you would love E5.
E5 also combusts cooler which has other benefits.

FWIW, all high octane fuel blends tend to have lower calorific values than low grade petrol, not just E5.

What I said was that 'ethanol has a lower energy (joules/litre) rating' and the Maxol website agrees with that statement because they reckon that Unleaded 95 has a calorific (energy) rating of 31 MJ/litre while one litre of bioethanol has just 21.2 MJ.

    http://www.maxol.ie/general-content/e5-questions-answers.html

The E5 fuel that they sell has a rating of 30.5 MJ/litre so perhaps when you used the word 'marginal' you were referring to E5 rather than pure bioethanol.

My Golf auto adjusts the timing because it can handle 95 or 98 but I don't notice any performance difference when driving on E5. As far as I am concerned the gain I make with the higher octane is offset by the reduced energy content of E5.

You can get Super in most stations in Inishowen; however I've not seen it any further south than there; and I've covered virtually the entire country in the past 6 months.

No surprise then that most of Inishowen is covered in red stripes on the Garda speed traps map!

Thanks lads, thats not great news. Its a 1988 BMW 320i. the engine is in phenomenal condition as it has been really well looked after. The Guy I bought it from (in the UK, only its second owner) was of the opinion that it should have the Super and while I know it will run ok on regular I'd like to use what is best for it.

I might try the head offices of one or two of the retailers tomorrow.

    Thanks again.

Does it make any difference????. Is that Shell V-power the same thing. I have never had a petrol car so i dont know.

They don't sell Super anywhere in southern Ireland anymore because there are ridiculous taxes on it and it would be too expensive.

As was said Maxol E5 is around 99 octane.

Higher RON is more noticeable on higher performance Turbocharged cars. Likes of imported Subaru impreza's, lancer evolutions etc.
They are mapped more aggressively and will knock a hell of a lot on 95 ron if driven hard.
Resulting in rebuild time. For the average car the difference would be neglible IMO.
Dyno results would be the only real way to prove, and not the ass dyno as some people use...lol

I know E5 is available in some Maxols, but who else sells high Octane petrol at the Irish Pumps?

Nobody. Some people say that Topaz is higher too but they don't confirm it. Maxol do - http://www.maxol.ie/general-content/e5-questions-answers.html#What%20is%20the%20Octane%20Rating%20of%20E5%20compared%20to%20ordinary%20Unleaded

You cannot buy any super (or high octane of any sort) in Ireland bar that.
