    Hey there.

I am thinking about applying for CSLL. I am hoping to study french as my language.

I am wondering if there is anyone on boards who knows about this course?

If so, I would be really grateful if you could reply.

Just general info really. What's it like? How many hours? Is it challenging/enjoyable etc.

I know that there's bucket loads of info on the TCD site and in the course handbook but I'd love to hear from someone who has done or is still doing it.

    Thanking you dearly.

Hey. I study French but part of TSM. But I share a few classes with CSLF people. AFAIK you do Erasmus in your third year. From what I've gathered it's challenging enough. I was talking to a guy I know from my language class who does the course. He was stressed about an essay he has to write on the word, in. Just on the word 'in'. It sounds tough. As regards to language, you've have 2 written french classes, 1 french oral class, French Grammar lecture. You might also have a class on Contemporary France. All of this each week.

Wow Lethal_Bullet, that's a huge drop! How's CS up there actually?

Djcervi, thanks for all the info. God, that essay sounds tough! I read about the Erasmus in third year. It's definitely something i'd love to do. I was thinking of doing Multimedia in Cork first but I decided a good while back that i think i'd prefer the Computer science, french and linguistics. How is french in Trinity?

There's loads of CSLLers on boards.

I used to do it myself way way back but never finished it. Good course though, but make sure you're fully interested in all three subjects before you do it.

Well French in Trinity is a small bit of a culture shock from Leaving Cert. There is a high standard expected from the French department. However if you do a bit of work you should be fine. For grammar in particular, you're expected (to a certain extent, in my experiece anyway) to do a lot of it on your own. I'd definitely recommend French grammar book from Schaum's outlines, as that has definitely sorted me out on this issue. For TSM you also study literature in 1st year, but then you choose two options for second year: eiher literature, linguistics (Varieties of Contemporary French/not really hardcore linguistics like in CSLL) or ideas into politics. So if you don't really like literature, it's possible to avoid after first year. I'm doing literature and linguistics. Literature is hard, but interesting, however l do like linguistics. Best of luck with your choice OP.

i'm doing french as a broad curriculum module this year and the lecturer is really terrible. i know its not the same level as french in csll but ive heard that in general, the french department is pretty bad.

Hi, just saw your thread now! I'm first year CSLL, doing it with Irish. As was said, we started out with nine, but there's five of us in first year now (two doing French, two doing German and me doing Irish)

In terms of hours, this term I have 19, and I think students doing French have a couple more. The workload so far is pretty managable, though obviously I can't speak for how it turns out later on! Those 19 hours also include labs and tutorials.

Anyway, I'm enjoying it so far, and if you're coming in tomorrow I'll see you around. :)
